Pre-Hangover, Zach Galifianakis And Ken Jeong Stand-Upped Their Way Through 1998
There's nothing better than watching a couple of current celebrities when they were young. And I'm not talking about witnessing Lindsay Lohan's current drama and then going back and watching her in The Parent Trap. I'm talking about seeing people before they were famous and before they traded in their lumpy sweatshirts for fancy suits. It also helps if the video is from the '90s (see: Bradley Cooper) and if it includes not one but two famous people, preferably two people who worked together again later in their careers. Now that I've laid out those rules, what's this we have here? Just a video of The Hangover co-stars Zach Galifianakis and Ken Jeong doing stand-up comedy together in 1998. All the ingredients, right there.
ScreenCrush posted the find, and it fascinates me. First of all, I had no idea those two had ever even been in the same room before they starred in The Hangover together. Maybe I'm just not a member of the right “Hangover Stars Before They Were Famous” message boards, but this is news to me. Second of all, we need to talk about the way these two youngsters looked 15 years ago, when they were both 29 years old (I know!). Ken Jeong looks exactly the same. He still has that hunched-over way of standing and that weird delivery. He could start talking about Changnesia and, aside from the very '90s “button-down over a T-shirt” look, I'd think I was watching Community. Zach, on the other hand, looks the same but different. That's the only way I can think to describe it. He's a younger, less bearded Zach Galifianakis wearing a hoodie.
Now let's talk about their comedy. Meh. The bit Zach does with Ken is all about Greek and Asian stereotypes, and that's just not my kind of thing. But at about 5:30, Zach starts a bit about yelling things out to prevent himself from getting mugged. Things like, “Oh my God, I can't believe I only make four dollars a week!” I'll admit it made me chuckle. So did his bit listing things never said by him and his roommates, such as “How was your date?”
Watch the '90s magic play out below while you anticipate their 2013 reunion known as The Hangover 3.
