Didn’t Dexter Learn Its Lesson The Last Time They Cast A Hot Blonde Opposite Michael C. Hall?

Yvonne Strahovski Dexter season 7 Julia Stiles cheating affair Michael C. Hall Jennifer CarpenterAfter the lackluster season 6 of Dexter, which was way too weighed down with religious angst but then redeemed itself with a great twist in the last minute, we've been kind of apathetic about casting for next season. After all, now that Debra Morgan has walked in on her brother Dexter (who she might also be in love with?) murdering someone, it really doesn't matter what the new characters do—we want to see what happens with Deb and Dex! However, TVLine's report that Yvonne Strahovski is joining Showtime's dark comedy/horror series is welcome news. She was fantastic on Chuck; TV viewers have missed her since the show ended last year.

That said, I'm also a little anxious about the casting directors' decision to bring in a hot blonde. It's shades of season 5, when Julia Stiles was brought in as Lumen, the first almost-victim that Dexter has saved and then trained. She was a good rebound for him in dealing with his wife Rita's brutal murder… but rumor had it that Stiles hooked up with star Michael C. Hall off-camera, messing up his marriage to co-star Jennifer Carpenter. Although their divorce was finalized early this year, as recently as February the two were spotted looking very affectionate out in public. Maybe they decided that if their characters are actually going to pursue a romantic relationship in season 7 they should be on speaking terms?

This is more joke than anything else; in no way am I suggesting that Yvonne would mess up whatever is going on between her new co-stars. It's just odd timing that we have a similar situation to Julia Stiles from two years ago. Especially when you read TVLine's description of Yvonne's role:

She will play the role of Hannah McKay, a strong, independent woman with a past that she’s struggled to put behind her. As a turn of events leads Miami Metro Homicide to ask for her help in solving some old cases, Dexter works with her and begins to wonder if there’s more to this woman than she’s professed.

Dexter's last few love interests have been psychopathic compulsive liars, sweet wounded women, and… yeah, that's about where the line is drawn. We'll see where Hannah McKay lands.
