Your Oscar Questions Answered: What Is Albert Nobbs?

By  |

As the Oscars draw nigh, you may notice some slightly unfamiliar sounding names in the list of nominees. One such name is probably Albert Nobbs. Here are some pertinent facts about it.

1. What is Albert Nobbs?

Albert Nobbs is a film starring Glenn Close as a poor woman living as a man in an effort to survive and make a living in the harsh economic climate of 19th century Ireland. It was directed by Rodrigo Garcia (The Sopranos, Six Feet Under) and based on a short story by Irish novelist George Moore. It's like, totally literary.

2. Is Albert Nobbs a good movie?

The film received mixed reviews, getting a combined score of 57/100 on Metacritic (which averages all the reviews written about a given film). Salon.com thought it was more interesting than much of the flashier Oscar bait released this year, while Time Out New York found it clunky and unintentionally funny. Most reviewers agreed Glenn Close did a fine job playing the female-to-male trans character, though.

3. What Academy Awards is Albert Nobbs nominated for?

Best Actress (Glenn Close), Best Supporting Actress (Janet McTeer), Best Makeup.

4. Will Albert Nobbs/Glenn Close win any of these awards?

With Meryl Streep as Margaret Thatcher and Michelle Williams as Marilyn Monroe also in the running this year, it doesn't seem likely. But then again, you never know!

5. Should I see Albert Nobbs?

That's up to you, now isn't it? Personally, I think it looks pretty appealing, as it combines two of my favorite subjects: cross-dressing and labor history. But check out the trailer and decide for yourself.
