Rhys Ifans Hints At Who That Is In The Amazing Spider-Man’s Credits Scene

Instead of just talking about what it means to adapt an iconic character or sharing funny anecdotes about the spandex suits blah blah, the actors also have to be primed to talk about the movie's inevitable post-credits scene that sets up the sequel. That's the case with The Amazing Spider-Man: Actor Rhys Ifans, who plays Dr. Curt Connors/The Lizard, also appears in a brief sequence halfway through the credits. And now that the movie's been out for a few days, he's allowed to tease who shared the screen with him.

Ain't It Cool News caught up with Rhys recently and got him to spill a few hints about the scene. Obviously if you haven't seen the movie, spoilers from here on in! To jog your memory, we see Dr. Connors in some sort of maximum-security prison; he's not quite wearing a straitjacket, but he's still batty. There's someone waiting for him, a shadowy figure who threatens to go after Peter Parker and then disappears. The scene is kind of abrupt and punctuated with bolts of lightning and what I thought was green light.

Since the main villain of Sam Raimi‘s Spider-Man trilogy was Norman Osborn/Green Goblin — played by Willem Dafoe, with his son James Franco later taking on the identity — I thought that's what this was hinting at. Especially since earlier in the film we learn that Connors was creating this genetic-engineering serum in order to save a dying Norman Osborn. But Rhys Ifans says that our guesses are wrong:

AIC: Okay, what do you think about that ending?

Ifans: Well, Connors is basically locked up in a very high-security mental institution.

AIC: We were debating whether it was a prison or a mental institute.

Ifans: It’s not a zoo. [laughs] I kept seeing it as maybe a mixture of both. Then a representative from OsCorp appears miraculously in the room. How he gets in there and how he leaves, we don’t know. Maybe we will find out. But it’s not Norman Osborn.

AIC: It’s not? You can say that?

Ifans: Yeah. But it is someone who is in the employ of Norman Osborn without question.

AIC: Someone we’re familiar with, who we don’t know is employed by Osborn?

Ifans: Yeah. Who knows? Maybe he will be the next bad guy; we’ll see.

This is about the best we see of the guy. GeekScape realized that the actor is Michael Massee, who's appeared in 24, Catwoman, and other projects. Interesting that they chose a name actor for a tiny cameo; it's unclear if he'd actually reprise this role in the next Spider-Man movie. It's all very hazy right now, but at least Rhys has cancelled out one possible choice for who the sequel's villain could be.
