Two Of The Boob Showings Referenced In Seth MacFarlane’s ‘We Saw Your Boobs’ Song Occurred During Rape Scenes

When I first saw Seth MacFarlane‘s “We Saw Your Boobs” Oscar bit, I found it vaguely distasteful. Couched in a pretense of “William Shatner thinks this is terrible” (which served as a thin excuse for still, you know, doing it), it seemed like unfair punishment for the actresses who were brave and/or kind enough to get nude (or at least partly nude) in service of the movies they were in. If you really enjoy seeing boobs, and want to continue seeing them, wouldn't you want to avoid mocking actresses for showing them to you? And we only saw Scarlett Johansson‘s boobs because someone illegally violated her privacy. Seeing women's boobs against their will is fun!

Then I realized two of the actresses referenced showed their boobs in actual rape scenes,  and four of the characters referenced were dealing with rape trauma for most of their respective movies, and it got even grosser. It's one thing to be super immature and hypocritical about artistic nudity. (“LOL @ you for showing me your boobs!”) It's another entirely to watch a rape scene for the glimpse of bare breasts you might see while a man (or in some cases, multiple men) is forcing his penis into a character's orifices while she fights and cries. Like, “sure, the rape scene in Boys Don't Cry was a bummer, but I totally saw Hillary Swank‘s tits, which was awesome!”

As for Monster‘s boob-showing scene, it doesn't happen during a moment of violence, but as two characters try to help one another recover from the effects of violence, and it's supremely annoying to think anyone could watch this heartrending scene and think “huh huh, tits.”

In general, jokes like this fade into the background of allegedly “edgy” (but actually intensely normalized) misogyny that constitutes the culture we currently inhabit. If I got upset each time some said or did something to uphold casual misogyny or rape culture, I'd be upset all the time. But as a pop culture blogger, I also feel it's my job to point out particularly egregious examples and remind people that just because this shit is everywhere does not make it funny or okay. “I watch rape scenes for the tits” sounds like something out of an Anal Cunt song, not the freaking Oscars. PS: NO HOMO.
