The 18 Moments In The Unbroken Trailer That Will Make You Tear Up

Jack O'Connell as Louis Zamperini in Unbroken GIF lifting thing over his headThe first trailer for Unbroken came out today, and before you watch it, let me encourage you to locate a box of tissues and the quietest corner of your office. I watched it right at my desk, which was an error of epic proportions.

As you may know, Unbroken is the true story of Olympic runner Louis Zamperini, whose plane was shot down during World War II, beginning an ordeal that included being stranded adrift in shark-infested seas for forty-seven days, only to be captured by the Japanese and taken to the first of many prisoner of war camps, where he endured years of atrocities at the hands of Japanese guards who were later convicted as war criminals.

It's…a lot, but I was able to get through it in the book, so I figured I'd be prepared for the trailer for the movie, directed by Angelina Jolie. WRONG INCORRECT NO. It's only two and a half minutes long, but I teared up approximately eighteen times. No exaggeration. Here were the moments that will get you right in your feels.

Oh and in case none of this is hitting home? Feel free to remind yourself that this amazing man died earlier this month of pneumonia at the age of ninety-seven. Guhhhhh.

  1. Ugh goddamnit, already?? When we see his feet running from behind. I'm a sucker for running when it's underscored by a soaring soundtrack.
  2. When his brother tells him, “You fight harder than those other guys? And you win.”
  3. With a shot of him running again? Oh my god, I'm a goner.
  4. The way he tears through the finish line with his mom and dad watching! You guys I am tearing up just writing this sentence, what is wrong with me?
  5. The tension in his voice when he yells ‘ALRIGHT' and there's a moment of silence right before the plane hits the water.
  6. …the plane hitting the water. I'm ashamed of myself.
  7. But then I did okay for a second, until the phrase ‘a survivor who refused to be broken' flashed onscreen.
  8. When the Japanese guard drops Louis after he says he's the Olympic athlete.
  9. AND HE MAKES EYE CONTACT WHEN THE GUY TELLS HIM NOT TO. My hearrrrrtttt.
  10. The guy covering his mouth as he hears Louie on the radio talking to his mother and father.
  11. The way Louis nods at the guy right before he gets punched by him. So much compassion in such a small gesture.
  12. “HIT MEEEEEEE!” I can't do this.
  13. “I used to think that I could do anything…that I was better than I am.” Shiny shiny eyes at my desk right now.
  14. More running! Music swelling! In the distance, someone yells “Come on, Louie!” In the foreground, Alexis' eyes well over.
  15. High fives! Fireworks! And then the repeated phrase, “If I can take it, I can make it,” the advice he was given earlier. (Hello. Crying.)
  16. The school bullies telling kid-Louie to stay down while they're hitting him.
  17. …juxtaposed with him having to lift that thing over his head or be shot…
  18. And him doing it!!!!!! GOODNIGHT EVERYONE I HAVE TO GO TO TEARDROP ISLAND.

See you guys on Christmas Day to see this goddamn tearjerker of a masterpiece, yeah?
