Most of the time — with a good enough travel itinerary — it is totally possible to visit the sights you see on your flat screen TV (or 13-inch MacBook pro). Even better, typically filming locations are no big secret, so it's fairly easy to figure out the actual location of the land you've been dreaming of at night. Pack your bags and turn off the TV because these 17 TV shows will give you a strong urge to travel the world.
The shots of the sun rising over the Golden Gate Bridge, fun music playing as they show the Transamerica building in the introduction. The Charmed Ones' nightclub may not actually exist IRL but there are a ton of similar ones that will help you get your Charmed on in SF. When Phoebe goes to China Town to pick up ingredients for a spell or converses with a ghost in Alcatraz, you'll want to be touring the city ASAP. FYI, though, the Charmed house AKA Halliwell Manor's exterior is located in LA on 1329 Carroll Ave. Guess it's just a road trip away.
2. Sex and the City
Grab a group of your closest girlfriends and bring a whole lot of spending money. Sex and the City takes us clubbing, shopping and brunching through the streets of the Big Apple. Carrie and her gal pals are pretty much New York's hottest. When the show was on air, that is.
On the opposite coast, we have the stud Vincent Chase and his ~entourage~. This group of guys go to all of the hot spots in LA, but you don't have to be a movie star to get the star-studded experience in Hollywood. Hop off the plane at LAX and you can live lavishly for a weekend like the men of Entourage.
4. Big Little Lies
After you hit LA, rent a car and drive up the coast to visit another iconic spot in HBO-land. The opening credits of Big Little Lies is enough to make you want to grab your keys and go. Add to that the million dollar mansions on the beach and you're alreadg checking your calendar to see how soon you can get there.
5. The Young Pope
The Young Pope takes place in the Vatican where a young, brooding, (sexy) and newly elected Pope comes to power. With every episode, we become more and more fascinated with the golden ornate rooms the Pope enters TBH.
6. Broad City
Now this is a different kind of New York than the glitzy glamorous one of Sex and the City. Ilana and Abbi try and navigate the busy-busy streets of present day New York City — mostly on rollerblades. Their cringe-worthy, real-life scenarios make us want to chill hard with them and take in what the city has to offer.
7. Downton Abbey
Downton Abbey is a British TV drama that focuses on a family's Georgian country house. While obvi time-travel is off the table (for now!), you can at least visit the UK to get your Downton Abbey fill. You'll be itching for tea and crumpets in no time.
Portlandia low-key brings light and humor to the stereotypes of Portland. The eccentricity of the city makes it all the more desirable.
If you push the pretty severe plane crash to the back of your mind and just look at the island, it is an amazing vacation destination. Lost was shot on the island of Oahu so it's a totally doable vacay spot... just be sure to pack light and look out for the mysteries in the shadows.
10. Twin Peaks
Twin Peaks is a small and eerie town with big mystery. Most filming took place in Snoqualmie, North Bend, and Fall City in Washington. Now's the time to make that trip in light of the reboot.
11. Grey's Anatomy
When the doctors aren't hands deep in an open-heart surgery, they're grabbing at Joe's Bar or saving lives after a ferry explosion. Okay, so these doctors spend most of the time inside the hospital but that doesn't mean you don't catch a glimpse of Seattle every now and then. The exterior shots alone are enough to make you want to book that flight.
Although there are a lot of up-to-no-good robots, Westworld makes us want to throw on a cowboy hat and our best pair of boots. Even if the robotic amusment park doesn't exist, it'd be nice to spend a couple of hours in a seedy saloon and then wander into a ghost town.
13. The Originals
The Originals mostly takes place in the French Quarter of New Orleans, which used to be the center of the city. The brick streets and old-fashioned buildings will almost make you feel like there's a vampire breathing down your neck.
14. Once Upon a Time
Unfortunately, Storybrooke isn't an actual place and Once Upon a Time is actually filmed in Canada. Grab your passport and hop over to Richmond, Stevenson to have your own fairytale moment in the quaint streets.
15. Hawaii Five-0
Despite the recent drama, it would still be cool to see this filming location. A group of detectives in an elite task force must eliminate crime on the island's beaches in Hawaii Five-0. Of course, your trip to Honolulu will ideally be more relaxing than their life on the isle.
16. Game of Thrones
Game of Thrones makes us want to hop on the first flight far across the country ASAP (minus all the incredibly gory battles). Pretending to be girlboss Kahleesi is totally possible if you snag a ticket to Iceland or Northern Ireland, just twpoof the iconic filming locations.
The destination: Brooklyn
You see all parts of New York when watching Girls, but the show really sells you on the fact that BK is the place to be for hip 20-something year olds.
