Prepare To Be Impressed By How British Olympic Diver Tom Daley Just Came Out

British Olympic diver Tom Daley coming out as gay in video December 2013You may not have heard of British Olympic diver Tom Daley before, but even if you haven't, prepare to be impressed with the incredibly wise, mature way that he just came out as dating a guy.

There have been rumors for a long time about him being gay, because you can't be as adorable, talented, and shirtless as Tom often is without people getting extremely interested in your personal life. But up until now, he's tried to keep that stuff private, which is understandable, given that, as an Olympic medalist at  age nineteen, his life is already so public. He's also gone through a lot of late, including losing his father to cancer, so satisfying the curiosity of the tabloids wasn't at the top of his list of priorities.

But now, on his own time and in his own words, Tom decided to get on YouTube to clear the air a little and get some things off his chest. He didn't do a magazine cover or a high-profile television interview because he says it shouldn't matter, and it's his own business, which I love. All he wants to do is be honest about the fact that he's currently dating a guy, which he thought might be confusing in light of a recent interview where something he said was taken out of context. In an interview published in the Daily Mirror in September, Tom is quoted as saying:

“I think it’s funny when people say I’m gay…I laugh it off.”

I don't know if Tom really did say those words or not, or what the confusion was, but it sounds a lot like he's insisting that he's straight. But instead of hiding behind that and implicitly misleading his fans, Tom decided to set the record straight about his sexual preferences. No pun intended. He says in the video:

“Recently, I was misquoted in an interview, and it made me feel really angry and frustrated; emotions that I've never felt before, when reading something about myself. For me, honesty is something that I really do believe in. And I've always been honest. I may have been vague in my answers, but I've always been honest.”

He says it was always in the back of his mind that he might be bisexual, but this spring, he met someone amazing, who makes him really happy…and that person just happens to be a guy. No big deal, and he says “in an ideal world, I wouldn't be doing this video, because it shouldn't matter.” Word, dude. Word.

According to him, he's still interested in girls, but “right now I'm dating a guy and I couldn't be happier.” I don't know about you, but there's nothing more impressive to me than someone who's comfortable enough with themselves to realize that coming out isn't an issue, and to be able to express it so clearly and maturely as a teenager is insane.

Congratulations to you, Tom. So glad you're happy and that we're that much closer to living in a world where sexual preference doesn't matter at all. In the words of Tom's dad, before he died, “As long as you're happy, I'm happy. And right now, I couldn't be happier.”

Couldn't have said it better myself.
