The Muppets Jumps On The Hunger Games Bandwagon To Promote Their DVD

The Muppets Hunger Games parody trailerIt makes sense that one of the most buzzed-about movies of 2011 would encounter one of the most eagerly anticipated releases of 2012, but we were still surprised when we came across this Hunger Games parody put out by The Muppets‘ studio. It uses footage from Jason Segel and Nicholas Stoller‘s beloved movie to recreate the breathtaking Hunger Games trailer.

It's amazing how well it actually fits: Piggy's dress looks a lot like something Effie Trinket (Elizabeth Banks) would wear, for one. But by far the best moment of the parody is when Pepe does the ominous “10-9-8…” countdown that gave us shivers when we saw Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) going into the Arena.

It's a savvy move from the folks who want to see The Muppets do well on DVD. However, I don't necessarily think that they needed to conjure up the Hunger Games mania to get attention. Even though the Muppets movie was wonderfully self-referential, aside from the trailers there wasn't a ton of parody in the film itself. What made it bubbly and touching was the character of new Muppet Walter and his wide-eyed reverence for the Muppets as performers. At least, that's what had me “aww”ing every other minute in the theater. That's what I think they should've focused on for the DVD release.

But anyway, here's the trailer:
