In The Bunheads Preview, Sutton Foster Has So Much Broadway Charisma That I’m Literally Uncomfortable

Wow, I'm really  Our Lady of the Upcoming Television Programmes today. Please place your candle at my altar as I engage in my opinion of a preview for yet another show, this time on ABC Family and starring Broadway's Sutton FosterBunheads.

The premise of the show is that a former showgirl (Sutton Foster) gets married and moves with her new husband to a ‘sleepy coastal town', where she begins teaching dance in her new mother-in-law's dance studio. It's Executive Produced by Amy Sherman-Palladino, who brought you Gilmore Girls, and the preview is making me feel a certain type of way.

This probably will be a good show. But for some reason, when I watch the preview, my face contorts itself into the same grimmace-y face that I get when I'm watching American Idol and someone isn't really bad or really good…they're just a little off. And I don't know the song very well, so I can't put my finger on it, but wrong notes are being hit. I just know it.

In this case, I think it has something to do with Sutton Foster's Big BroadwayFace. This is a woman who's used to telegraphing her expressions and movements all the way to the back of a crowded theater. And she does it very well, I might add. But we do not need all that, Sutton Foster. We do not need those things. So even though I know you to be an excellent dancer from all the Broadway shows I've seen you in, on the small screen, those movements that you're doing right now look suspiciously like a gangle-dance. And I don't know how to feel about it!

Bunheads is obviously supposed to be a feel-good comedy about finding your true purpose in life and helping kids and coming to terms with the meaning of success and happiness. And I'm sure it will be very successful at that…but instead I'm finding myself fascinated with Sutton's sharp, flashing teeth, and how quickly she can whip her head around.

That said, I wish good things for the show, and safety to all the young bunheads involved (that's another thing — the title is odd and makes me crave Cinnabuns). May you dance flawlessly and stay far away from Sutton's flailing arms and and snapping jaws.
