The Bad Lip Reading of Star Wars Is Everything You Never Knew You Needed
Just when you thought maybe you were starting to get tired of all the many, many Star Wars tributes leading up to the release of The Force Awakens, Bad Lip Reading pops up with three new videos, one for each movie in the original trilogy. Considering we usually have to wait months to get just one video from these guys, it's like Christmas came early this year. How we've gone decades without these videos I don't know, but we have them now and they're glorious.
Not only is it absolutely hilarious, but there are a few celebrity cameos to enjoy from Jack Black, Maya Rudolph and Bill Hader. If you'd asked me yesterday whether I'd ever want to hear Jack Black voicing Darth Vader, I'd have said a definite no. But now that I've experienced it, I never want to go back to hearing James Earl Jones — with all due respect to James Earl Jones, of course. If you're wondering how they read Darth Vader's lips through his mask, the answer is they didn't. They just have him say whatever they want, and/or what goes along with what other characters appear to be saying.
It's like that for a few of the other characters, too. For instance, R2-D2 and C-3PO don't have moving mouths either. At first I thought this would make the videos less funny, but I was proven wrong almost immediately, because there are so many other characters who do have moving mouths, and who do say ridiculous things. If you want to know my favorite of the three videos, it's got to be Empire Strikes Back. Between Luke calling Yoda's performance “sorta pitchy,” to Lando and Chewie shouting “Huh?” back and forth at each other, to Luke getting very upset about Darth Vader's childhood nickname, there's just so much to love.
