10 Songs You Didn’t Know Were About Celebrity Feuds

10 Songs You Didn t Know Were About Celebrity Feuds Songs about feuds graphic jpgToday is Eminem‘s forty-second birthday, so you know what that means, right? You’re old. No, I’m just kidding! Although you are very old, we all are.

No, what I really mean is that Eminem has now been throwing shade for right around forty years. (I assume he probably wrote his first diss track at age two, but who knows, it could have been earlier.)

Anyway, the fact that he’s been so prolific in his insults to other artist got me thinking about all the songs out there that are slamming another famous person. So I decided to take a trip down memory lane to remind myself of some of my favorite examples of celebrity feuds. Come along with me?

1. Mariah Carey and Eminem

Song: ‘Obsessed’

This feud started when Eminem made claims that he and Mariah had dated, which Mariah vehemently denied. According to him, they were together for six or seven months and he just wanted her to admit it, but according to her, they’d met maybe four times, and he was just obsessed. So that was the title of her song, and though she’s denied that it’s about Eminem, her ‘stalker’ in the video is dressed just like him, so draw your own conclusions.

2. Common and Drake

Song: ‘Sweet’

I feel like all of Drake’s beefs with other artists are over women. With him and Chris Brown it was over Rihanna, and his feud with Common is no different, as Common’s song ‘Sweet’ is rumored to be a warning to Drake to stay away from Serena Williams. They fired tracks back and forth at each other, and I’m no expert, but I’m pretty sure Common won the whole thing with this set of lyrics:

“Don’t do it ’cause every song you make is really hoe music / I heard you say you wasn’t a bitch cause you sing, you a bitch cause you clean like a bitch that’s 18 / Can’t say my name but rap about a nigga’s wife / you so black and white trying to live a nigga’s life / I’m taking too long with this amateur guy, you ain’t wettin’ nobody, nigga, you Canada Dry.”

Zingggg. (You can still say that when rappers burn each other, right? Cool.)

3. Fergie and Perez Hilton

Song: ‘Pedestal’

I’m aware that it’s kind of a reach to call Perez Hilton a celebrity, but I’m a sucker for anyone who takes him down a peg, so he makes the list. He initiated a feud of sorts with Fergie by making disparaging comments about her on the internet, and she struck back by…making a whole damn song about him. Advantage Fergie.

4. Madonna and Lady Gaga

Song: ‘Two Steps Behind Me’

This song hasn’t been released yet, and maybe never will be, but it leaked in August and the lyrics make clear reference to Gaga and the fact that her song ‘Born This Way’ sounds suspiciously similar to Madonna’s ‘Express Yourself’:

“You’re a copycat, Where is my royalty? You’re a pretty girl, I’ll give you that. But stealing my recipe, it’s an ugly look. Did you study me hard enough? You’re never gonna be, you’re just a wannabe me. Like a sister all messed-up, who’s gonna help you out? In your fantasy, you can try it all. But you can’t be me. You can walk the walk, even talk the talk. But you’ll always be two steps behind me.”

5. Taylor Swift and John Mayer

Song: ‘Dear John’

Remember back in the day when Taylor still dated people? Well John was one of the guys in her roster, and according to her song ‘Dear John’, it didn’t end super well and she felt taken advantage of.

6. John Mayer and Taylor Swift

Song: ‘Paper Doll’

Oh hello again you two! Back so soon? Apparently John Mayer wasn’t super cool with being labeled a lothario in that relationship, so he fired back his own song criticizing Taylor for not knowing what she wanted.

7. Foo Fighters and Courtney Love

Song: ‘I’ll Stick Around’

Dave Grohl has never fully admitted that the song is about Courtney, but there are many lines in the song that suggest he’s never forgiven her for the death of Kurt Cobain, such as:

“How could it be I’m the only one who sees your rehearsed insanity.”

8. Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears

Song: ‘Cry Me A River’

Britney never really held up the whole ‘feud’ part on her end, because she didn’t write a response to ‘Cry Me A River’, but the fact that Justin got a Britney lookalike for the video and so openly accused her of cheating is enough to get him on the list.

9. Nicki Minaj and Lil Kim

Song: Black Friday

These two have been at each others’ throats since 2007, but it turned musical in 2010 when Nicki rapped ‘So let me get this straight, wait, I’m the rookie? But my features and my shows ten times your pay?’ on Monster, which was swiftly followed up with Kim’s track ‘Black Friday’ and album art covered in blood. Subtle.

10. Jay Z and Nas

Song: ‘Ether’

Their animosity started when Nas failed to show up to record their planned verses on Jay’s track ‘Bring It On’, and went on to become one of the most high-profile feuds in hip-hop. Nas released the track ‘Ether’ calling out Jay for misogyny, stealing lyrics, and accusing him of being a homosexual, while Jay released ‘Supa Ugly’, which was just as aggressive but not as well received. You play nice, fellas.

Phew, that was a lot of hate and aggression for one post! Obviously there are way more feuds in the music world that I didn’t even touch on, so let me know in the comments if there were any glaring ones I missed. Other than Tupac and Biggie of course, because I KNOW THAT.
