Sorry Benedict Cumberbatch Fans, You Get No New Sherlock ‘Til 2014
What happened to me, you guys? Mere months ago I was bragging about my lack of interest in Benedict Cumberbatch and the fact that I'd never seen his show Sherlock, and here I am today obsessing over the minutiae of the next season. But here's the thing, it's not minutiae, okay?! I watched the entire first two seasons in less than a week (that's with a full-time job, an internship, and multiple weekly improv rehearsals and performances, mind you), AND I AM READY FOR THE THIRD ONE NOW PLEASE AND THANK YOU. They're just so good! They're addictive! They and Arrested Development are the only things keeping Netflix in business right now, I feel like.
But anyway, if you're as close to the edge of your seat as I am, waiting for this new season, then I have some bad news for you. Unless you're reading this across the Atlantic from me, sipping a nice Early Grey while a soft rain patters against your window view of Big Ben, then you won't be getting any new Sherlock until 2014. And it'll be sloppy seconds at that, because yet AGAIN the show will be premiering in the UK before it hits US shores, just like Downton Abbey. Come on guys! Even Harry Potter got to us more quickly than that, and that was over a decade ago! Surely we have the technology now to air a television show in two countries at the same time, no?
This information is coming out as members of the Sherlock crew plan their first appearance at the San Diego Comic-Con later this month. Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss, both co-creators, executive producers and writers for the show, and Sue Vertue, one of its producers, will conduct a panel whose exact date and time will be released tomorrow. No actors will be in attendance, but there will be some ‘surprises'. Could mean a lot of things but I'm hoping for, “Today is opposite day, so the two countries are switched. The US is getting Sherlock first and also Adele belongs to you now.”
