9 Actors Talk About What It Was Like To Film Their First Sex Scenes
Do you ever watch a sex scene in a movie or TV show and wonder what the hell it's like to film something like that? First of all, you have to pretend certain things are happening when they're actually not, and it's gotta look convincing. On top of all that, you might be naked, so there's that to consider. And then there's a room full of people there staring at you and telling you what to do. Then again, you might get to do it with someone extremely attractive, so that goes on the pro side of the list.
Some actors have done so many sex scenes that at this point it's probably old hat to them. But what about the first time? Losing your sex scene virginity, if you will. That's gotta be pretty scary and uncomfortable, right? Right. Usually. So read these actors' firsthand accounts of what their inaugural onscreen sexytimes were like to film.
1. Lizzy Caplan
“I was so nervous and then I was so drunk that after I shot the scene I was going up to the crew members — I had just met all these people the day before — and I was going up to all of them being like (imitates drunk self), ‘You gotta boner! You do! You got one!’ It was horrible.”
Yep, before Lizzy's first sex scene on True Blood, she chugged some vodka. And it got her drunk, as vodka tends to do. I'm currently praying to the pop culture gods that video will emerge of her doing the boner thing. Please oh please, I need to see it.
2. Zac Efron
“I was nervous because I’ve been in love with her since I can remember … It was very surreal for me.”
Zac's talking about Heather Graham, with whom he had some fake sexytimes in the movie At Any Price. Anyone else now considering becoming an actor for the chance to simulate sex with their celebrity crush? It happens; Zac Efron is living proof of that.
3. Rebel Wilson
“So we're kind of doing the scene, and it's not supposed to be a funny scene … and then Michael Bay, the director, says, “Uh, I'm not sure this is quite sexy enough.' And I said, ‘I know what'll make it more sexy: nunchucks.' I just happened to have brought my nunchucks that day, and then we incorporated them into the bedroom scene.”
Obviously Rebel's sex scene for Pain and Gain ended up involving nunchucks. What's a sex scene without them? A bad sex scene, that's what.
”It was very nerve-racking for me. I told my agent that I never want to do it ever again.”
Vanessa is referring to the threesome she filmed with James Franco and Ashley Benson for their movie Spring Breakers. It's not clear whether Vanessa means she won't ever do another threesome, another threesome with James and Ashley specifically, or just another sex scene. The second option she probably doesn't have to worry about repeating. That's quite specific.
5. Dave Franco
“You have 20 crew members who are also watching you do it, and of course, for me, I woke up that morning and had a giant pimple on my ass! … I had to go to the makeup artist, who I had also met that week … ‘Can we go into the other room and you'll put makeup—literally—on my ass, and uh…?'”
Speaking of sex scenes with Francos, little Franco had to do one for his movie Neighbors, and he had to show his butt. What a great day to get a butt zit. I think that's the movie star equivalent of getting a zit on your nose for picture day.
6. Bow Wow
“It was with a porn star. I don’t know her name. She probably watching this like, ‘What?! I did a scene with him, and he doesn’t remember my name?!’ Nah, I don’t remember her name, but she was bad though. She was baaaaad! I was cool. I was comfortable with it. I was definitely comfortable with it. It is what it is — normal stuff that happens.”
Bow Wow's sex scene was for an episode of Entourage. I'm going to go ahead and assume, based on his enthusiasm, that he means his co-star was “bad” as in “good.” Well, glad he enjoyed himself. Although he seems a little too proud about forgetting her name.
7. Yael Stone
“I’ve never said this, but I did my first sex scene before I’d actually had sex in real life … It was a leap of imaginative faith. A lot of times we create roles and their experiences we haven’t had but we have to imagine it. I happened to do that as a young 15-year-old person.”
Yael plays Morello on Orange is the New Black, so by now she's used to sex scenes, but when she did a miniseries called The Farm, she wasn't. As you can see, she wasn't even used to sex, period. But thank goodness Yael seemed to have such a great attitude and mature approach about it.
“Aww. It's my favorite scene in the whole movie! [Laughs] I think we only did three or four takes. It was both of our first times having an onscreen [sex] scene. It was such a safe, comfortable environment and I am so grateful that it was with Miles, because he was such a gentleman and made me feel very comfortable and nurtured. And I think I made him feel very comfortable and nurtured. It was really sweet. We wanted it to just feel natural. Just the way that it was filmed, with just James and a camera, and the way it was lit, it was really easy to forget that anyone was in the room aside from Miles and I.”
Leave it to Shailene to wax poetic about how amazing her first sex scene was in The Spectacular Now. But at least it's something she can really be proud of, considering it's one of the most true-to-life teen sex scenes we've seen onscreen in a long time.
“I wanted to prove, to myself most of all, that I could try something different … Brad was just like, ‘Be nice to the guy. He's only a kid!”‘
Jennifer Aniston did that movie The Good Girl with Jake Gyllenhaal a while back and everyone was like, “OMG Rachel Green is in a drama and she's having an affair with a younger man!” Turns out her then-husband Brad Pitt was totally cool with their onscreen sexytimes. He was mostly worried about Jake. Am I the only one feeling awkward right now?
