10 Celebrities Who I Didn’t Expect To Be Funny But Proved Me Wrong

First impressions can be deceiving, especially with celebrities. If someone’s branded as a comedian or a comedic actor, one would assume they’re funny people who will be amusing in interviews and kill it when they host Saturday Night Live. Then there are other people who, because of the types of movies they make or music they record, don’t give off a very funny impression at first, so you just assume they’re probably pretty serious people. And then they whip out a great joke on Twitter or give a hilarious performance in a viral video, and your brain explodes. Or at least mine does.

I didn’t expect these ten celebrities to be especially fun(ny) when I was first introduced to them, and for a lot of them it took me quite a bit of time to fully realize that they had senses of humor – and great ones at that. And now I know not to judge a book by its cover, or by its dramatic, Oscar-winning movie role.

1. Charlize Theron

Charlize has always intimidated me, because she’s so beautiful and statuesque and talented, and because she removes that necklace so violently in that perfume ad she’s in. But I was never intimidated by her for being funny. I figured since she took on so many serious roles she’d probably be very serious as a person. Then I saw her series of Funny or Die videos, particularly the one where she recreated the video sensation “Sittin on tha Toilet,” and almost died of laughter.

2. Jon Hamm

Mad Men’s 2007 premiere was my first introduction to Jon Hamm, and since he played such a dramatic character I assumed he was like that in real life. Even if he was funny, I didn’t expect him to be that funny. Then I saw him host SNL and do a guest stint on 30 Rock and was blown away. Talk about amazing range.

3. Adele

When I first heard Adele’s music and saw her music videos, I thought, “Wow, what an incredible artist. I bet she’s a really serious lady.” Then I heard her talk with that adorable accent and goof around in interviews and my jaw dropped. Not only do I envy her talent, but I want to be her best friend forever and ever.

4. Brian Williams

I used to assume that news anchors take themselves just as seriously as they take the serious news they report. Bri Wi has completely shattered that assumption for me. Once I saw his deadpan delivery on The Daily Show and Late Night, I fell in love. He can slow jam the news for me any time.

5. Victoria Beckham

She was Posh Spice, for crying out loud. She rarely smiled and she always looked like she was posing for a Vogue shoot. I think most of us assumed she wasn’t very fun. But she is fun, you guys. Did you see that picture she shared of herself with the handbag on her head? She’s a hoot.

6. Anderson Cooper

Another news reporter. Anderson is so great at delivering hard-hitting news that I couldn’t imagine him letting loose and cracking jokes. Then I saw him host New Year’s Eve on CNN with Kathy Griffin and my whole world view changed. He’s absolutely delightful.

7. Blake Lively

There was just no way someone with hair that marvelous who had a role on a teen drama like Gossip Girl could be okay with looking silly and making a fool of herself. Oh how wrong I was. Did you see how funny she was on SNL?

8. James Franco

Sure he did movies like Pineapple Express, but for a while there he was always just the handsome guy from Spider-Man. Then I realized he was a-okay with joking about himself in Funny or Die videos and developed the biggest crush. His gig at the Oscars forced me to break up with him, but I felt those feelings again when I saw This is the End and found him to be one of the funniest parts. I can’t quit him.

9. Helen Mirren

She played the Queen! She couldn’t possibly let loose. What’s that? She dyed her hair pink and grabbed Jessica Biel’s boobies? OBSESSED.

10. Justin Timberlake

Hear me out here, guys. I’m talking about way back when, during his noodly-haired stint with *NSYNC. Never did I ever think he would go on to be one of the most hilarious SNL hosts of all time. I also didn’t expect to get so sick of him, but that's a discussion for another post.

Honorable mention goes to Jeopardy! champ Ken Jennings, who's only sort of a celebrity. I thought he was just nerdy and ultra-competitive, but his Twitter account is one of the wittiest ones I follow. Sorry I misjudged you, Ken.
