Video: Sean Penn (As Aging Rob Smith Doppelganger) Hunts Down Nazis In This Must Be The Place
If you like Sean Penn, glam rock, Nazi movies, and touching emotional journeys, this is definitely the film for you.
I love all of those things, so I'm incredibly stoked to be able to post a new trailer for This Must Be The Place, an amazing-looking assemblage of themes that first premiered at Cannes last year and is set to hit regular US theaters November 2nd.
In it, Sean Penn immerses himself in the role of an aging, sad sack, rock star who bears a striking resemblance to The Cure‘s Robert Smith. Based on this alone, I'd peg him as a proto-Goth new wave/post punker, but a waitress in a diner says he “sang with Mick Jagger,” so maybe he was more of a New York Dolls-style 1970s glam-rocker. Regardless! Penn's Dublin-dwelling character must overcome his fear of flying and the world in general to visit his dying father in America, at which point he accepts the unlikely mission of hunting down the Nazi war criminal who tortured his father at Auschwitz many years ago. I have no doubt the results will be entertaining.
France McDormand plays the rocker's wife and The Talking Heads' David Byrne has a cameo as well, and there is at least one joke about how the younger generation knows nothing about rock and roll. For all these reasons and more, I have to disagree with my former colleague Liana‘s haterade-soaked assessment and say this is going to be the best movie ever.
