I LOVED the Spice Girls when I was kid, so it's pretty weird to me that fifteen years have passed since the height of their popularity and Scary Spice is turning 38 today. I was nine when Spice World came out and you better believe I had that thing on VHS and put it on heavy rotation. The Spice Girls were everything a young girl could want in her music. Their songs were really catchy, they had convenient descriptive nicknames, catchphrases (Girl power!), and wore really colorful, crazy outfits. They made me want to have my own girl group and I probably thought I would be wearing a Union Jack mini dress and platform sneakers when I grew up because that just made sense at the time. That's what the best adults, The Spice Girls, wore so of course that would be what I wore when I was an adult.

Times changed though. The Spice Girls split up. Ginger Spice left first which was very devastating for me as she was my favorite. The girls moved on and started having solo careers, getting married, and having secret children with Eddie Murphy. Okay, that was just Scary Spice, (thankfully, multiple Spice Girls members did not have Eddie Murphy's babies) but that's who we're here to talk about because today is Mel B's birthday! In honor of her 38th, here's ten not so scary facts about Melanie Janine Brown.

1. Mel B joined the Spice Girls after finding an audition notice in The Stage magazine. The band was originally called Touch, but was changed to the Spice Girls after switching management. Mel sang “The Greatest Love of All” by Whitney Houston at her audition. Below is the audition notice which looks like it's from 1776.

2. The Spice Girls' nicknames were decided by the girls and the editor of Top of the Pops, Peter Loraine who says Mel B got the name “Scary Spice” because she “was so loud and had tried to takeover our whole photo shoot.” He goes onto say, “We ran the names for a couple of issues and the first time the girls saw them they thought it was funny. Then the newspapers started picking up on the names and they cropped up everywhere.” After that girls everywhere began arguing over who was Posh and who was Sporty.

3. She won a Razzie Award, along with all the other Spice Girls, for Worst Actress for Spice World. I don't care. I love that movie. It was amazing when I was a kid and I saw a little bit of it on TV the other day and it's still just as good/bad.

4. She briefly changed her stage name from Mel B to Melanie G after marring a Dutch dancer named Jimmy Gulzar. They divorced after two years and Mel B was back to being Mel B. Never change.

5. She has three daughters, Phoenix, Angel, and Madison. Angel's father is Eddie Murphey. Anyone remember that scandal? Anyway, it's how Angel ended up with the full name, Angel Iris Murphy Brown. Murphy Brown! Like the show my mom used to watch back in the day!

6. She wrote a memoir called Catch A Fire about her life with the Spice Girls. I'm not going to lie, I sort of want to read this book that I only found out existed two seconds ago. Sounds like a good beach/pool book.

7. Her Twitter contains gems such as this:

I'm very glad that she still has her moves and that she's inspired by such fine cinema as Step Up 2: The Streets.

8. Speaking of her “hubby,” she's married to Stephen Belafonte, a film producer who costarred on her reality show.

9. Wait. What? She had a reality show? Yes. It aired on the style network and had one, ten episode season in 2010. It was called Mel B: It's A Scary World. Ha… ha… get it? It's a play on words. Ha…

10. Mel will appear as a judge on the upcoming season of America's Got Talent which premieres on June 4th. She's already been a judge on The X Factor Australia, so I guess she'll know what she's doing when she presses that giant rejection button or whatever it is they do on that show.

Happy birthday Melanie/Mel B/Melanie G/Scary Spice!
