SNL Returns With Seth MacFarlane And Wins Me Over With Gangnam Style

By  |

Saturday Night Live returned last night, with host Seth MacFarlane and musical guest Frank Ocean, and I have to say, considering how hot-and-cold SNL‘s been in the past, I didn't totally hate this for a first episode. Seth is probably best known for voicing many of the characters in his series Family Guy, and he put those talents to good use in his monologue, imitating Stewie, Peter, and Quagmire, and then moving on to everyone from Marty McFly to George Takei to an anti-Semitic Kermit the Frog in a surprisingly catchy musical number. Also sidenote: Seth has a pretty bangin' voice. I'm sure the world somehow already knew that, but I didn't.

It may be a sign that the writers don't completely trust the new cast yet, because they threw Seth in every sketch and gave each of the newcomers about one scene each. But no matter, I'm sure they'll get more screen time in the future. My most favoritest sketch of the night was the Gangnam Style one, set in a customized hat store called ‘Lids'. It starred Jason Sudeikis, Kenan Thompson, and Seth as morose hat salesmen, and Bobby Moynihan as ‘that guy I could watch dance all day'. Seriously, I need no other entertainment.

Other highlights included Bill Hader and his inappropriate puppet, Nasim Pedrad and Seth on a hilariously annoying date, and Ryan Lochte and Honey Boo Boo joining Seth Meyers on Weekend Update.

Also a strange, unannounced cameo by John Mayer while Frank Ocean played video games. Oh and in other excellent news, SNL finally has a good caricature of Barack Obama, with Jay Pharoah replacing Fred Armisen. I think I speak for all of us when I say I'm relieved we can have one less person in black-face every Saturday night.
