Saoirse Ronan to Star in Next Stephenie Meyer Movie ‘The Host’

You didn't think that Breaking Dawn would be the end of Stephenie Meyer‘s books being adapted for the big screen, did you? Sure, the Twilight author has mentioned continuing the series with the strange Jacob Black/Renesmee Cullen romance, but until that rumor gets confirmed, it's her 2008 book The Host that looks to be getting a movie, with Saoirse Ronan attached to star.

Ronan — who most recently appeared as a ruthless, trained killer in Hanna — will play Melanie Stryder, one of the few remaining humans who haven't been taken over by alien parasites known as Souls. When she is finally captured and implanted by a soul named Wanderer, rather than give up her consciousness and let the parasite change her personality, she fights back. The book plays off this interesting two-voices-in-one-head dynamic, as Wanderer (a sort of champion among her species) struggles to get Melanie to give up the location of the human rebels.

At the same time, there's something of a love quadrangle, since Melanie is in love with another rebel named Jared, but Wanderer (still controlling Melanie's body) finds herself falling for someone else. I haven't read the book, but from what I've heard, I could imagine Liam Hemsworth, Josh Zuckerman, Max Irons, or Anton Yelchin as Ronan's male leads.

Meyer held onto the rights for The Host for years, but finally made a deal with producers Nick Wechsler, Steve Schwartz, and Paula Mae Schwartz, who adapted Cormac McCarthy‘s dystopian novel The Road in 2009.
