Sam Smith Says He’s Taking a Break From Twitter After Oscars Backlash

88th Annual Academy Awards

After his Oscar night didn't go as well as he hoped, despite his first win for Bond theme “Writing's on the Wall” from Spectre, Sam Smith is getting off social media for the time being. He //tweeted, “I'm logging off for a while. Some Martinis shaken not stirred are definitely in order.” This comes a few days after Sam's Oscar victory speech where he mistakenly claimed he was the first openly gay winner. While his message was sincere and important, it caused some backlash after it was soon pointed out there have been many openly gay Oscar winners in the past. One of those winners was particularly unhappy with Sam's claim and let him know about it. Dustin Lance Black, who won for his Milk screenplay, //tweeted at Sam with a particular shady message saying “if you have no idea who I am, it may be time to stop texting my fiancé” with a link to his Oscar acceptance speech. Dustin later clarified that Sam and his fiancé Tom Daley are pals, so he was surprised Sam didn't know about his Oscar win.

Sam later //tweeted “Second openly gay man to win an oscar or third or fourth or 100th, It wasn't my point” adding that his real point “was to shine some light on the LGBT community who i love so dearly.”

That wasn't the only disappointing Oscar moment for Sam either. He later told the BBC his performance of the winning song “was the worst moment of my life. Singing was horrible. I hated every minute.” So Sam probably won't be signing on anymore Bond themes after the mess it caused him. Although, as he said to the BBC, he has a pretty great idea for who should do the next theme- The Spice Girls. Now that's an Oscar speech I really would love to see.
