Tony Scott The Rock tweet Twitter celebrities mourn

In the wake of director Tony Scott‘s shocking suicide yesterday, actors and artists have taken to Twitter to express their condolences to his family and to celebrate his legacy. Because Scott was better known by his projects (Top Gun, Man on Fire) than by name to younger audiences like Crushable's readers, it was really heartening to see stars like Justin Timberlake, Zachary Quinto, and The Rock speak out about Scott's death.

It also gives us hope that the younger generations in Hollywood won't feel the need to stay so closeted about their own depression. Scott was 68 years old when he took his life with no warning (and, as some reports allege, “no hesitation”), but more and more, we're encountering Hollywood stars who will admit to and embrace their own emotional issues. Celebrities like Owen Wilson and Catherine Zeta-Jones are candid about their struggles and show that you can be depressed but still successful.

Check out our gallery of celebrity tributes to Scott over Twitter. It's really classy that these stars took time out of their weekends to remember Scott.

Update: And here's Tom Cruise‘s statement:

“[Tony Scott was] a creative visionary whose mark on film is immeasurable. Tony was my dear friend and I will really miss him… My deepest sorrow and thoughts are with his family at this time.”

Rest in peace.
