Rebel Wilson Credits Her ‘Distinctive’ Look For Her Success, I Credit Her Overall Awesomeness

Pitch Perfect Rebel Wilson

If there's one thing I hate, it's when truly awesome celebrities–namely of the female variety–sell themselves short.  Not in that subtle, humble-bragging way (ahem, Jennifer Garner) but in a genuine way that makes me fee like they don't believe in themselves.  In a recent interview with In Touch magazine, Rebel Wilson shared her thoughts about the success she's found in the industry:

“One of the reasons my agents signed me is because I'm not like any other girl here.  I think most girls who are encouraged to come to LA and become actresses are usually the prettiest girls in their hometowns of Iowa or wherever. So not looking like anyone else has made things easier for me, because I'm distinctive.”

Yeah, sure, among the skin and collar bones of Hollywood, people like Rebel Wilson and Melissa McCarthy “stand out.”  But to claim it's due to their appearance or weight making it easier for them to find funny roles would be supremely unfair to their true talent.  So is putting them in Inspector Gadget trench coats on the cover of magazines, but I digress.  While I understand what Rebel's saying here–and that “prettiest girl in their hometown of Iowa or whatever” line totally made my day–let's be clear.  She's been successful because she's effing hilarious.  Her comedic timing and delivery is unique to her style and on-par with every other successful comedic actress.

Rebel went on to say she hopes her looks inspire other women to not feel pressured to fit a certain unrealistic ideal.  “There are so many glamorous actresses – but in the real world, nobody looks like that.” As I look down at my bleach-stained yoga pants and glance over at the Italian sub waiting for me – I have to agree with you, Rebel.
