Prometheus Ups The Viral Marketing Ante With Peter Weyland Giving A TED Talk

Guy Pearce Peter Weyland TED 2023 Prometheus Weyland-YutaniHere are two things you've likely heard of but may not know a ton about: Ridley Scott‘s new sci-fi film Prometheus, and TED Talks. Let's start with the latter first: The TED (Technology, Entertainment, and Design) conferences started in 1984, with the focus on “ideas worth spreading.” In the last few years, TED Talks have become much more publicized, with public figures like Eat Pray Love author Elizabeth Gilbert and J.J. Abrams trying their hands at these fifteen-minute speeches.

Then there's Prometheus, Scott's new sci-fi film about the crew of the ship Prometheus in 2085, who are exploring an advanced alien civilization for clues as to the origin of humanity. Of course, everyone is assuming that Prometheus is an obvious sequel to Scott's 1979 classic Alien, but the director has denied any concrete links.

And here's where the two things I mentioned come together. Scott dropped this incredible piece of viral marketing into our laps: Guy Pearce doing a TED Talk in 2023 as Peter Weyland.

See, Weyland-Yutani is the corporation in the Alien movies that's more than happy to sacrifice its human employees in the pursuit of the fearsome titular extra terrestrials. And Peter Weyland sounds appropriately unhinged and arrogant about humanity's capacity to build and control robots. By releasing what's basically a short film tied to Alien in advance of Prometheus‘ release, Scott is establishing a link between the two. In a recent interview, he clarified the connection:

“When the first Alien movie and Blade Runner were made, I thought that in the near future the world will be owned by large companies. This is why we have the Tyrell Corporation in Blade Runner, and Weyland-Yutani in Alien. They sent the Nostromo spaceship.

The Prometheus is owned by an entrepreneur called Peter Weyland, and is played by Guy Pearce. That's the connection between the two films, and nothing more. Prometheus is a new film, a new world, and is full of new ideas. And of course new monsters as well.”

Some fans wish there could be a lot more, but it's unclear if Scott is trying to derail us or if that's really all that he's planned. However, the Prometheus trailer looks pretty cool, and it stars Michael Fassbender (as an android, no less), Noomi Rapace, and Charlize Theron.
