Poll: Would You Watch the Series Premiere of Zooey Deschanel’s Sitcom New Girl Online or On Your TV?
Fox's new sitcom New Girl, starring Zooey Deschanel as a girl who moves in with three single guys after finding out her boyfriend's cheating on her, will be coming to your TV in an unprecedented and risky way. That is to say, it's coming online before it even premieres: You can now download the pilot free from iTunes, two weeks before its September 20 premiere. Is this not weird to anyone else?
Call me old-fashioned, but there's a difference between pulling up the new episode of Degrassi or One Tree Hill on your computer if you miss the air date, and settling in front of the TV to watch the pilot of an entirely new series. It doesn't seem real unless you're watching the show on its intended medium — your TV.
Obviously Fox made this move for the attention, and with the intent of drumming up buzz in the next two weeks. It's also likely that a certain subset of the population watching the pilot online will tell their friends to tune in on the TV. We hope it's more of a stunt than a change in the whole “TV vs. Internet” debate.
