10 Celebrities I Wish Would Just Go Away For A Year

Friends Ross Geller We Were On A Break

You know how sometimes you eat pizza for dinner every night for a week and by the end of it you don't really like pizza so much anymore and need to have a week of tacos to cleanse your palate? Or when you visit your family for the holidays and at first it's so lovely and then after three days you can't wait to get away from those people for as long as possible? Or what about when you watch Mean Girls three nights in a row on TBS and decide on the third night that you need some time away from it so it's not ruined the next time you watch? Haha, just kidding about that last one. It's humanly impossible to get tired of Mean Girls. But you get what I'm trying to say.

The same thing can happen with celebrities. Sometimes you can admit that a star is overexposed even if you actually like them a lot. In fact, the need to take a break from a star is a pretty nice one, because it shows that you care about them enough to not want them to burn out. It's different from wanting a celebrity to just go away period (cough, Bieber, cough), and it's also different from acknowledging that someone's overexposed but getting endless entertainment from them (cough, Kardashians, cough).

My career advice (and I'm super duper qualified to give it) to these ten stars is to just get out of the spotlight for a year or so and then come back better than ever. The reasons I'm sick of them vary from lost shock value to dwindling talent to big-headedness, but the thing they all have in common is that I believe in them. Absence makes the heart grow fonder.

1. Jimmy Kimmel

I used to rank Jimmy Kimmel right up there with Jimmy Fallon in terms of talk show ability. But then Kimmel's pranks got more and more immature and overdone (not to mention untrustworthy), and while Fallon continued to come up with more and more original concepts, Kimmel's started to feel stale. I realize it's hard for a talk show host to disappear from the spotlight for too long, but I need a little break.

2. Lady Gaga

Oh, Gaga. Your music was the soundtrack to my life for part of college. I used to watch your videos on repeat. But now you've run out of ways to be weird and I'm just not that interested anymore. Take a year for yourself (maybe on your home planet) and come back better than ever. You can do it!

3. Ben Affleck

I'm not one of those people who signed a petition to get Ben Affleck fired from his Batman gig. I honestly could not care less. I'm just a little Afflecked out. I think he's very talented and I don't want him to fall off the face of the earth, but he's one of those guys where the more I see him, the less I like him. Adding a superhero franchise to the list is just a lot to deal with.

4. Beyonce

We all know she's a goddess and a fierce performer and looking at her is like staring into the sun, but that's bound to get old eventually. Yes, she rules the world, but she doesn't want her commoners to get disenchanted with her, does she?

5. Justin Timberlake

Ugh, this guy. When you break your album up into two parts, star in movies, make constant appearances on Jimmy Fallon's show, and have what feels like an hour-long tribute at the VMAs that features a three-second appearance from the band that made you famous, I'm bound to get sick of you. There's no denying Justin is a great performer, but he's starting to look really cocky.

6. Neil Patrick Harris

He's got energy and charm, no question. But he hosts everything. I'm pretty sure he's hosting this post as I write it right now. You never know when he'll pop up and host the shit outta something. And unfortunately, as we saw at this year's Emmys, not every NPH hosting gig can be flawless. Take a chill pill and host life with your adorable family for a while, Neil.

7. Anne Hathaway

I'll admit Anne's done a pretty good job of laying low since she won her Oscar and the world collectively groaned. I used to adore Anne, and as much as I rolled my eyes at her faux-humble press tour, I think she deserved that Oscar for Les Mis. So I'm just here to say, stay out of the spotlight for a little longer, Anne. When you emerge from your privacy cocoon you'll be a lovable butterfly again.

8. Johnny Depp

We've already discussed the fact that Johnny can't stop playing weirdos and how tiring it's become. I vote he retreat into the shadows for a while and then get back to old Johnny, not this commercialized gimmick. Because he's just getting way too predictable.

9. Miley Cyrus

I think most of us can agree that Miley Cyrus needs to go away for a little while, but a lot of people would argue she should never come back into the spotlight. I'm not one of them. As tired as I am of her PR-driven behavior, I do believe she has talent. If she can take some time off to harness that talent and stop hiding behind naked music videos, she might have a triumphant return.

10. James Franco

Ex-boyfriend-in-my-head James Franco needs to sloooow down. Every week he has a new degree, or a new movie he directed/wrote/stars in, or a new book, or ahhh I can't even talk about it anymore. It's great that he wants to work and stuff, but it's looking less and less like he's interested in it and more and more like he just wants to stay relevant. He needs to go live in a cabin somewhere and make us (and by us I mean me, his imaginary ex-girlfriend) miss him again.
