Five Reasons The Mariah Carey Vs. Nicki Minaj Feud Might Be Fake
So about this supposed Mariah Carey vs. Nicki Minaj feud: I'm starting to get skeptical.
As believable as it is that a diva would yell at another diva, and said other diva would then escalate things further by acting like the first diva is going to kill her, I'm not 100% sure I buy this Mariah Carey/Nicki Minaj American Idol feud. And neither is The Voice judge Cee Lo Green.
When approached by a very complimentary TMZ reporter and asked what he thought of all the fighting, Cee Lo replied, “I think it's just entertainment for everybody, is it not?” The reporter then asked him straight up if he thinks it's legit, to which he replied sagely, “this is Hollywood California, hardly anything's legit.” Indeed!
While Cee Lo obviously has motivation to make American Idol look bad, I think he could be right. Here are some reasons why:
–American Idol is flagging in ratings. What better way to make people watch it again than by dangling the tantalizing possibility of an on-air fight? This tried and true practice has worked for hockey, roller derby, and pretty much every reality show besides Here Comes Honey Boo Boo. I'm actually surprised they didn't try it sooner.
-Nicki Minaj isn't stupid. I think she knows better than to pick a fight with a very well established older performer without it being some kind of publicity stunt Mariah Carey is in on. Sure, she's beefed with Lil' Kim before, but maybe that was a publicity stunt, too.
-Mariah Carey isn't stupid. I think she knows better than to pick a fight with an unpredictable Barbie monster from Mars without it being some kind of publicity stunt Nicki Minaj is in on, because Nicki might chop off her head and eat it.
-It's a logical extension of the “celebrity judge” theme pioneered by The Voice‘s Christina Aguilera. It's no longer enough for celebrity judges to sit there, being all famous and talking civilly about the contestants. WE WANT DRAMA!
–Ryan Seacrest is running out of things to talk about on his radio show.
