Nicki Minaj Thinks Barbara Walters Treated Her Unfairly Because She’s ‘A Little Black Girl That Raps’

In a new three-part series from E! called “My Truth,” Nicki Minaj addresses (among other things) her feelings on how the media treated her caught-on-camera feud with Mariah Carey. In a word: unfairly.

As you may recall, Barbara Walters aired Mariah's vaguely hysterical side of the story (as told to a publicist, as told to Barbara Walters) without giving Nicki a chance to tell her side of it, because Barbara's people supposedly couldn't reach her.

Via HuffPost:

“Nicki has said, ‘Well, why didn't we reach out to her? It was one-sided.' We did,” explained Walters, who claimed she had Carey's home phone number. “Even on the air, at that moment. I didn't have her home phone number. We said, ‘Please call us!'”

I found it somewhat suspect at the time that the woman who's interviewed everyone from Michael Jackson to the Shah of Iran would not be able to interview someone because she didn't have their home phone number, but whether they reached out in other ways was left deliberately unclear. As you may recall, Nicki expressed her displeasure on Twitter.

Now, Nicki is telling her side of the story in her very special special, and she claims the feud was wildly distorted by Walters and others. First, she says the hidden camera footage was misleading as to who started the fight (via MTV):

“20 minutes before that happened, she egged me on and I walked off — I stormed off the stage because didn't wanna do that, so I left and when I came back it was another jab…She's admitted that she did not want another female doing the show, thinking somebody's coming to steal her shine. And nitpicking, nitpicking, nitpicking — I don't do well with that passive aggress sh–. I'm not gonna allow it no more. I can't. I work and keep it moving, I don't even f— with the people in this business.”

She also disputes details of the story, including one rather major one:

“I really felt good when I left yesterday and then I hear that Mariah went to Barbara Walters with some more fabrication that even the producers told her was never said. Telling Barbara I said something about a gun, which everybody knows that I'm way smarter than that. Literally my jaw was just hanging open and I was in shock. I've never in my life said anything regarding a gun.”

Lastly, she accuses Barbara Walters of treating her unfairly because she's a rapper:

“Am I not good enough for you to get my side, because I'm a little black girl that raps?” she said, addressing Walters directly. “Because if I was J. Lo, you would've called J. Lo's camp. But are we not good enough for you Barbara? ‘Cause you wasn't even there when I was on the show Barbara. So I guess I'm not good enough but I'm only good enough for you to tell people I'm ‘unpredictable,' when you don't f—–g know me?”

Mariah Carey is part black herself, and I wouldn't go so far as to straight up declare Barbara Walters a racist. However, I don't think I'm the only one who got a little uncomfortable with how willing so many people were to believe that a rapper had said something about a gun. That said, I'm pretty sure this was the result of a combination of Barbara being on “home phone number” terms with Mariah, and Babs wanting a headline-grabbing story despite not having been able to contact Nicki yet. That said, I'm still not convinced this whole thing isn't a publicity stunt.
