14 Great Movies About Friendship You Can Watch On Netflix Stand by Me weird gif

Valentine’s Day is this weekend. As we know, that’s the holiday that’s all abut looooove. But love comes in lots of different forms besides just romantic. Platonic love is also important. Remember when you used to give those corny store-bought valentines to your friends in elementary school? Just because you’re grown up now doesn’t mean you should stop celebrating the love between friends.

Whether you’re in love or not in love, dating or not dating, maybe take some time this Valentine’s day weekend to spend time with a friend. Or to just watch a movie about friends. Netflix has plenty of titles that emphasize the importance of friendship, and we rounded up some suggestions.

1. Stand By Me

Real friends outrun trains with you. And find dead bodies with you. And fight Kiefer Sutherland with you.

2. The Station Agent

Peter Dinklage, Patricia Clarkson and Bobby Cannavale form an unlikely friendship when Peter’s character inherits a railroad station. It’s quirky and heartfelt.

3. Hugo

Just a boy and a girl getting up to shenanigans in 1930s Paris.

4. The Emperor’s New Groove

This movie proves that friendship transcends class and also species. But not exactly, considering one half of the friendship is human-turned-llama. You know what, just watch it.

5. Fried Green Tomatoes

Nothing’s better than female friendships and Southern cooking. It’s been proven… to everyone who watches this movie.

6. Frances Ha

If you’re okay with the artsy style, this is a great story about what friendship is when you start actually becoming a grown-up… or at least trying to.

7. Lilo and Stitch

Ohana means family, and oh no, look at that, I’m crying over a little girl and an alien.

8. Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion

Not only is this movie totally hilarious, it’s actually really heartwarming as well. Real friends don’t care whether you invented post-its.

9. Steel Magnolias

Bring the tissues with you, because this one’s a tearjerker. Lady friends are so important, you guys.

10. Reign Over Me

Adam Sandler and Don Cheadle are former roommates who reconnect after Adam’s character loses his family in 9/11. And oh, look at that, I’m crying again.

11. Crossroads

Yeah, that’s right, I put this on the list. Everyone needs to watch something stupid every once in a while. Preferably with a friend or two.

12. Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood

It’s got the word “sisterhood” in the title, for crying out loud!

13. The Fox and the Hound

I saw this movie as a child and I don’t think I’ve stopped crying since. Nothing like an interspecies friendship to really tug at your heartstrings.

14. Paulie

In the mood to be emotionally compromised by a human/parrot friendship? You’re in luck, because this movie will do just that.
