Natalie Portman And Johnny Depp Accidentally Sign The Word For ‘Tampon’ In The New Paul McCartney Video
Well, this is embarrassing. Despite looking beautiful and generally doing a good job with their sign language, both Natalie Portman and Johnny Depp managed to accidentally sign some incorrect words in Paul McCartney‘s somber, black and white “My Valentine” video. And not just any incorrect words, but the word for “tampon.”
The first embarrassing slip-up comes around 1:00, when Natalie tries to sign the word for “appear” but signs the word for “tampon” by mistake. (If you check the video, the sign she's making totally looks like that's what it could mean.) Johnny Depp also signs the word for “enemy” when he's supposed to be saying “valentine”…I guess all that Tim Burton darkness really has taken hold of him.
A spokesperson for the British Deaf Association was pretty nice about it, saying:
“The sign for tampon does seem to come up from both Johnny and Natalie, which causes some confusion, especially as American and British sign languages are different. It would have been nice if genuine deaf people had been used. But it's still great. It's great that famous people such as Johnny Depp and Natalie Portman are highlighting the use of sign language.”
Indeed, at least they tried. Maybe they'll try even harder next time.
