Get Ready To Wish You Had A Friendship As ‘Weird’ As Mindy Kaling And BJ Novak’s

You know how there are some celeb friendships that you just want to protect at all costs while also feeling a desperate desire to third wheel it with them for the rest of your life? Or maybe just be magically transformed into a fly so you can forever lurk on the wall during their hangout sessions? I want to do that with Mindy Kaling and BJ Novak, if only for the fact that they have an admittedly unusual relationship as exes and current BFFs. Every time either of them talks about it, I get more intrigued.

In a new interview with The Guardian, Mindy explains they have a “weird” dynamic, but then she proceeds to give him such sweet compliments that you'll be dying for a friendship as weird as theirs:

“We are the first to admit our relationship is weird,” she says now. “There's no one funnier to me than him, there's no one who's a better writer to me than him. So when someone gives you the best opinions about all parts of your life, it's hard for that person not to be someone that you're like, well of course, I need access to them all the time.”

The fact that they're exes who not only get along but have become BFFs makes me think both of them must be pretty chill people to hang out with. I would imagine the fact that they got famous together on The Office has something to do with their continued closeness. And even though Mindy says they're like a “very cheerful, functional divorced couple,” that actually benefits their show:

“I'd be lying if I said there weren't times when it was difficult to work with an ex, but what's interesting is that this is what The Mindy Project is about.” She laughs. “So I found it incredibly useful and have been able to monetise it.”

It's kind of a relief to learn that working together as exes isn't all sunshine and rainbows (otherwise I'd start to suspect they're not real humans) but based on the adorable stuff they do together, like that trailer for BJ's book that Mindy starred in, the “forever” in Best Friends Forever totally applies. Not to put any pressure on them or anything, but if they ever have a falling out I will riot.
