Listening To Meryl Streep Talk About Beauty And Sexism Will Make You Love Her Even More

Meryl Streep oh i love you

There are some celebrities who you just can't imagine yourself loving any more than you already do, because if that were possible your heart would just explode in a mushroom cloud of emotions. Meryl Streep is one of those celebrities for me. She's arguably (but it's not really arguable, let's be real) the greatest actress in the history of ever, and yet she seems like she could just be your mom's cool friend who gives you advice over wine and crackers. Take, for instance, this 2008 interview she did with Entertainment Weekly.

You might be wondering why we're talking about a 2008 Meryl Streep interview in 2014. Well, in addition to just never needing an excuse to listen to Meryl being fabulous, it's also part of a series by PBS Digital Studios called Blank on Blank, in which they put the audio from celebrity interviews to animation. In this one, Meryl discusses Hollywood beauty standards and fashion, as well as sexism and how much all these concepts have changed over her decades in the business. Listening to her talk about this stuff will make you desperate to sit down and have a chat with her, because she just sounds so wise and approachable.

Meryl talks about becoming a movie star because she loved to act (what a concept!) and not because she was interested in glamour or fashion: “I never thought I was somebody that would be on the cover of magazines in fashion wearing fashions! It’s not me. But that is what movie stardom entails.” She also touches on how much Hollywood standards of appearance have changed since she started out: “I got famous before you had to do all the stuff.” My favorite part of the interview is when she tells the story of how she auditioned in front of a producer who insulted her appearance in Italian, wrongly believing a blonde Hollywood actress would never understand him. But hey guess what, Meryl does know Italian, which she made sure to prove by speaking it in response. How can you not love this woman?
