Matt Damon Never Denied Being Lovers With Ben Affleck Because He Didn’t Want To Offend His Gay Friends

Premiere of Focus Features' "Promised Land"

Now that Matt Damon will appear on-screen with Michael Douglas as his lover in Behind the Candelabra, Playboy magazine decided it was an appropriate time to bring up a 15-year-old rumor about his friendship with Ben Affleck: are they secretly gay?

I have a better question: are there really still people out there who believe this?  And actually care?  Thankfully, Matt Damon handled the question honestly and gracefully:

“I never denied those rumors because I was offended and didn't want to offend my friends who were gay as if being gay were some kind of fucking disease.”

I think I speak for everyone when I say “AMEN.”  They're both married to beautiful women and have beautiful children, yet they still have to tackle the “hey, are you guys gay?” questions?  And so what if they were?  I personally wouldn't mind seeing Brokeback Mountain 2: Matt Damon and Ben Affleck Fulfill Your Late 90's Fantasies.

Damon recently wrapped up filming the Liberace biopic, which explores the musician's life with his young lover Scott Thorson. Obviously he and Michael Douglas have to be expecting the ignorant questions about K-I-S-S-I-N-G (gasp!) and the like, and so far it appears as though they took their roles seriously:

We both have a lot of gay friends and we were not going to screw this up or bullshit it.  It wasn't the most natural thing in the world to do, though.  Throughout the script, it's not like I kiss him just once.  We drew it up like a football plan.”

He also assured Playboy and every other inquiring mind that Michael Douglas is a wonderful kisser.  Personally I'd rather pucker up with Catherine Zeta-Jones, but that's just me.  I guess I'll know I've really made my place in the world if I have to address my own lesbian rumors two decades from now.
