Did The Bridesmaids Ladies Make Up Their Martin Scorsese Drinking Game Specially For The SAG Awards?

Bridesmaids "Martin Scorsese" drinking game at the SAG Awards

Easily our favorite part of the mostly uneventful SAG Awards was the Martin Scorsese drinking game that the Bridesmaids ladies mentioned while introducing a clip from their movie. Kristen Wiig, Maya Rudolph, and Melissa McCarthy explained that while shooting their uproarious film, they had an on-set drinking game where you had to take a sip or chug whenever anyone said the word “Scorsese.”

“You’d be surprised how much that comes up in conversation,” poor Melissa said as she took a swig from the Grey Goose vodka bottle she'd lugged onstage. “People like to throw that thing around.” And they did: Her costars name-dropped a few times, not to mention all the happy winners when Scorsese's Boardwalk Empire took home two awards.

And here's the thing—we think that they made up this game intentionally for the SAG Awards. Our reasoning is, the ladies figured that Scorsese's Boardwalk Empire would beat out other nominees Kyle Chandler and Michael C. Hall (and in the ensemble category, the casts of Breaking Bad and Game of Thrones), so they might as well have an excuse to get drunk and enjoy the night. And lo and behold, Bridesmaids took home nothing while Boardwalk got both of its categories. Sure, it was only two wins, but two out of fifteen total awards is nothing to sneeze at.

Also, it turns out that Kristen Wiig has done this same gag before. On January 9, she and Bridesmaids director Paul Feig appeared at a panel for the movie in New York City. Entertainment Weekly reported that Kristen and Paul decreed that their panel would include a drinking game. The magic word? “Asshole.” And just as with tonight's show, the two stars just peppered the conversation with “asshole” whenever they wanted a sip of wine.

As for tonight, we feel like Steve Buscemi was even in on the joke beforehand, seeing as he said the magic word when he won for Boardwalk and handed his glass off to Tina Fey.

We'll be curious to see if Kristen Wiig carries the gag into a third awards show or event, though now that it made its way into a live TV broadcast, the dead horse may be beaten to a pulp.

Update: They brought it to the Oscars! And Marty had just the cutest reaction.
