Lorde Calls Out Hollywood For Forcing Women To Be Sweet, Deserves Neverending Standing O At This Point

Lorde Serious

In next month's issue of FASHION Magazine, cover girl Lorde gets straight to business on calling out Hollywood and its stupid gender stereotypes. Namely, the fact that women are expected to be saccharine sweet little princesses 100% of the time, while men aren't. This is an obviously ridiculous double standard, so I'm glad that our Lorde and Savior is both bringing attention to it and actively opposing it.

When asked about which females she admires, Lorde named singer Patti Smith for her no-nonsense attitude.

“I’m drawn to women who aren’t painted in history as sweet figures…There is a lot of pressure for us to be really positive all the time. Every photo shoot I do, I get asked for big smiles, and I shouldn’t have to be that way.”

Can I name Lorde in my next imaginary magazine interview? I'd like to do that, please. Because she's living proof that people will still love you just as much, if not way more, if you are just honest with yourself and everyone else about who you are. Who cares if you're in a cranky mood sometimes? Aren't we all? (The answers are “not a soul” and “absolutely,” in case our wires got crossed.)

Granted, this and every other admirable thing that Lorde says and does could be evil PR tricks fooling me into loving her, but let's not talk about that right now because I cry easily. I'm just so glad that she's inspiring conversation about such an important point. It might seem small until you've been made to feel badly for showing a full range of human emotion. Or, in Lorde's case, for wanting to smize instead of smile all the damn time in photos.
