On Monday, Life Unexpected will make its debut on The CW at 9 p.m ET/PT.

Life Unexpected centers around Lux, who turns 16 in the foster care system, and wants to be empancipated, but needs the help of her birth parents. Her father Baze (or Nate) didn't know she existed and Cate thought she had been adopted. Now they have the chance to fix their past mistakes, grow up a little and try to give their daughter a new life .. only it's very complicated.

“Just because people are cool fantasy people doesn’t actually make them fantasy parents,” creator and producer Liz Tigelaar said at the panel. “That’s something Lux has had to learn: reconciling who she thought Cate was with who Cate actually is.”

Both Cate and Baze are representative thirtysomethings.

“For me, thirtysomething can mean a person who prioritizes professional life over relationships or a guy who still lives like a frat guy … and drinks Coors Light,” Tigelaar said.
