Have you guys ever noticed that there are some celebrities out there who can be as dickish as they want, but their reputation never really gets damaged by it because of their liberal politics? It's kind of a weird phenomenon that we here at Crushable have been picking up on lately, and what better time than Election Day to really examine it?

Answer: no better time. Today is the best time. I should point out that I'm a liberal myself (and also kind of a dick, as it happens), so if you're hoping that this is about to be a rant about how the left-wing is ruining our society, you're about to be very disappointed. But if you're hoping it will be a careful examination of people who get away with being an asshole just because a lot of people agree with their politics, then hurray! You'll be very pleased!

So without further ado, here are 12 Stars Who Get Away With Being Dicks Because They're Also Liberals:

1. Sean Penn

If there's one thing Sean Penn loves, it's violent outbursts. He's assaulted photographers on numerous occasions, once in 1987 to the extent that he was sentenced to two months in jail for it, and he was charged with felony domestic assault during his marriage to Madonna. But somehow the first thing that comes to mind for me when I think of him is still his amazing performance in Milk and his protests against George W. Bush and the Iraq War.

2. Terrence Howard

This guy is a mess and I had no idea. He's been accused of punching women in the face on at least five separate occasions, which is completely insane. He was arrested for simple assault, terrorist threats, harassment and stalking in 2003, for punching a woman in a diner in 2005, assaulting a flight attendant on Continental Airlines flight, and it seems like he's never had a relationship end amicably. But he also complains about the Patriot Act, so I guess it's okay.

3. Susan Sarandon

Don't get me wrong, I love me some Susan Sarandon, and there's no way she's on the same level as some of the other people on this list. Not everyone is here for the same reasons. But you do have to admit that it's a little dickish to use your Oscar speech as a time to get your political views out there. I understand the impulse, but it still feels a little shady to me.

4. Alec Baldwin

Yet another actor who finds himself in almost constant controversy, for everything from infamously calling his own daughter Ireland a ‘little pig', to attacking paparazzi, to kind of apologizing for throwing around anti-gay slurs on Twitter. But at the end of the day, he was hilarious on 30 Rock, so I guess all is forgiven?

5. Russell Brand

I happen to agree with Russell most of the time (when he's not breaking up with Katy Perry via text message, anyway), but you can't deny that he acts like a pretty big dick a lot of the time. Or maybe all the time. It's kind of his thing. I'm much less bothered by it than I should be, because we share similar opinions…which is completely my point.

6. Michael Moore

There was a lot about Michael's documentary Fahrenheit 9/11 that was probably accurate, but there was a lot that was sensationalized as well, and he loves to stir up controversy. Whenever he feels himself drifting out of the spotlight, he does something dickish again to ensure that it gets written up.

7. Bill Maher

I have a feeling people would care a lot more about the allegations of misogyny and racism that tend to follow Bill around if he wasn't such an avid supporter of things like universal health care and equal rights. You can't have it both way, bud.

8. Jodie Foster

Oh Jodie. Such a prime example of someone who gets the benefit of the doubt just because she votes Democrat. All she has to do is almost come out every few years and she can be a staunch supporter of as many Mel Gibsons as she wants.

9. Sacha Baron Cohen

I don't know if you noticed, but Borat was kind of a douchey movie, and Bruno was even worse. Sacha essentially tricked people into looking dumb onscreen, but because he's forward-thinking, he gets away with it. Not super fair, but at least sometimes he's funny.

10. John Mayer

What a pile of douchenozzle! But as long as he continues living in Montana and keeps his insults restricted to the women he's dated and away from people like Barack Obama, we can pretend that his music is still trendy to listen to.

11. Howard Stern

Prime asshole. Famous for being a complete asshole. He's been fined over $2.5 million by the FCC over his entire career. But people let it slide because unlike most radio assholes, he's a liberal instead of a conservative. What an innovator.

12. Stephen Colbert

Again, here's another person that I really really like. And Stephen himself isn't an asshole, but he certainly does play one on TV. He interviews people in a way that has to be embarrassing to them later (at least I hope so), and pretty much roasted President Bush at the 2006 White House Correspondents Dinner in front of a whole room of conservatives when he was inexplicably asked to speak. I was the furthest thing from pro-Bush you could possibly be, and even I found that footage a little difficult to watch. Talk about kicking them when they're down.
