Lauren Conrad Has Second Thoughts On Her Book-Destroying Crafts Project

By  |

Lauren Conrad has taken down her latest crafting notion from Youtube following the Internet's unanimous decision that it was the WORST CRAFTS PROJECT EVER.

The video (which is still up at Buzzfeed) has Lauren describing the project as “a nice way to display books” before whipping out her exacto knife and hacking away at said books until they are grotesque, shivering, spines divorced from any knowledge they may once have imparted. Each time I watch that video (and I recommend you do), the bibliophile in me cannot help feeling like I am watching a hideous snuff film, while the blogger in me can't look away. The internet has never met a video of someone unwittingly embarrassing themselves that it didn't love, and this one is BROOTAL!

Slate was able to get in touch with Lemony Snicket, the author of one of the books Lauren savaged, and he had this to say:

It has always been my belief that people who spend too much time with my work end up as lost souls, drained of reason, who lead lives of raving emptiness and occasional lunatic violence.  What a relief it is to see this documented.

Indeed. Besides removing the Youtube video (which speaks volumes in and of itself), Lauren has yet to comment on the incident, but I'm guessing she's learned a valuable lesson: the best way to display “vintage books” is not to hack them to pieces, but to simply put them on the fucking shelf. Don't worry, you don't need to read them or anything. Sometimes the simplest solution is also the best.
