Kerry Washington Says Haters Can Call Her A Lesbian All They Want, Joke’s on Them Because She’s Not A Homophobe

Kerry Washington laughingEvery time Kerry Washington opens her mouth, I fall a little bit more in obsess with her. Falling in obsess is exactly like falling in love, minus the part where the object of your affection knows you exist. As you can imagine, I fall in obsess a lot. In fact, my lawyer says I'm right at the limit in between being a fan and being served with a restraining order. But how can I resist a celebrity who comes out on the record as not caring what people think about her sexuality.

In a recent interview with  Advocatethe star responded perfectly to a question about the rumors that she's a lesbian.

It’s interesting how much people long to fill in the gaps when someone in the public eye doesn’t share their personal life. I understand their frustration. I like how people will post pictures of me with other women that I adore, hugging on red carpets, and say, “See?” Are we so uncomfortable with love between two people of the same gender that we immediately label it as sexual? But I’ve never been bothered by the lesbian rumor. There’s nothing offensive about it, so there’s no reason to be offended.

Not only does she raise a good point about the public feeling the need to fill in details about her private life because she doesn't share them, but she also makes it clear that being called a lesbian isn't insulting to her. She doesn't need to defend herself because she doesn't see rumors about her sexuality as an attack. It's just something people say about her; Kerry Washington has great hair, Kerry Washington reminds me why sleeping with the president isn't a good idea, Kerry Washington loves to unwind at a good lesbian bar at the end of a long week. She's totally “whatever” about the rumors and I (in case you're slow on the uptake) love it.

While we still have quite a ways to go when it comes to eradicating homophobia, a major star like Kerry Washington coming out and openly saying that being called a lesbian isn't an insult gets us one step closer to equality. Hopefully, when her baby (!!!) is old enough to google her mom's name, she'll find this quote and be all like, “I don't get why they even asked you that, Mom!”
