Katy Perry Pays Tribute To American History, Wears Tiny Aretha Franklin Bow To Presidential Inauguration
In 2009, music legend Aretha Franklin got the whole world talking when she performed at President Barack Obama‘s inauguration wearing a fabulous hat with an oversize bow. Today, at President Obama's second inauguration as President of the United States, a young singer followed in Franklin's legendary footsteps by wearing a bow of her own. That singer was Katy Perry.
Katy tweeted a picture of her tiny Aretha Franklin bow, with the words “Big inauguration, tiny Aretha hat.” She wore the bow on her own floppy hat while attending the inauguration today in Washington, D.C., accompanied by none other than boyfriend John Mayer, who was, needless to say, sans Aretha bow. Based on how he wore a Santa suit, that's probably a good thing.
You can see Katy in all her Aretha glory here. Katy told People that she had the bow made especially for the event: “I thought it would be fun to do a shout-out back to four years ago.”
Celebrities have been celebrating President Obama's inauguration in true celebrity fashion all day. Lupe Fiasco‘s fiasco aside, James Franco wrote a poem to commemorate the event, and singers Beyonce and Kelly Clarkson performed.
But in my eyes nothing will compare to that tiny little Aretha bow. I can't be the only one with fond memories of Kristen Wiig‘s tiny hat sketch on Saturday Night Live. I can only hope that the 2017 inauguration features another singer in an even tinier hat, and then at the next inauguration another singer in a tiny tiny hat, and so on and so forth.
I'm personally disappointed Katy Perry didn't wear an Aretha Franklin bow bra, as would be expected of her. But I guess it's cold in D.C., and it's in poor taste, it's a serious event, blah blah blah. Whatever. You know you wanted to see it too, even just in the deepest darkest corner of your psyche.
