This Couldn’t Get Cuter — William And Kate’s Daughter Will Be Called ‘Princess’

Prince William, The Duke of Cambridge and Kate Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge, leave the King Edward VII Hospital together.Just when you thought you couldn't be more jealous of the delicate infant girl gracefully stewing in Kate Middleton‘s royal womb, now we hear that the baby girl's official title will be ‘Princess'.

“Well, yeah!” I hear you saying, “That was what I was planning on calling her the whole time!” And that's all well and good, but you would have been in the wrong. Oh so very wrong. The way it stood before, William and Kate's daughter would have been called ‘lady', a leftover from a century-old decree by George V that says only the eldest son of the Prince of Wales' eldest son could take the title ‘prince'. Since all signs point to this little bun being a girlbun, the Queen wanted to make sure that she changed the rule so any offspring of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are treated equally.

The decree appeared in the London Gazette on Wednesday, although apparently the Queen made this decision all the way back on New Years Eve. It covers all future children of the couple, and here it is in fancy talk:

“The Queen has been pleased by Letters Patentunder the Great Seal of the Realm dated 31 December 2012 to declare that all the children of the eldest son of the Prince of Wales should have and enjoy the style, title and attribute of royal highness with the titular dignity of Prince or Princess prefixed to their Christian names or with such other titles of honour.”

This all matches up with proposed legislation to change the rules about the line of succession so it's not so sexist. Steps have been made to begin the process across the UK to update the suystem so that a first-born girl could succeed to the throne even if she is ultimately followed by a boy. As it stands now, if the Princess ultimately got a little brother, he would do a little leapfrog maneuver to take the throne even though she's older. Times they are a'changin'!
