A Journey Back In Time To 1998, When Now Separated Johnny Depp And Vanessa Paradis Were Just Getting Together

By  |

Longtime partners Johnny Depp and Vanessa Paradis announced their separation today, after fourteen years together. They have two children, Jack and Lily Rose, and they've requested that their family's privacy be respected at this time, as the split was amicable. So since they've asked us not to go delving into the break-up, I figured we could take a quick jaunt back in time to where it all began…1998.

Poof! Here we are! Look around you. Things may look the same, but you're in 1998 now. Our president, Bill Clinton, is happily married to our First Lady, Hillary Clinton, the Winter Olympics are being held in Nagano, Japan, and Bear Grylls (yes, that Bear Grylls) just became the youngest British climber ever to scale Mt. Everest, at age 23. Elle Fanning and Jaden Smith were just born, while Frank Sinatra died.

On television, Dawson's Creek and Sex and the City premiered, along with Will and Grace and Charmed. If you want to go to the movies, you can go check out Armageddon, A Bug's Life, or Shakespeare in Love, if you're going on a date. If you're me, you're eleven years old and going into sixth grade, and you're not cool enough to know that you're supposed to be listening to Weird Al Yankovic, Britney Spears, and Smashing Pumpkins. If you're Vanessa Paradis and Johnny Depp, you're just meeting each other on the set of The Ninth Gate, following Johnny's break-up with supermodel Kate Moss, and you're about to begin a relationship that will last for the next fourteen years.

Bottom line, I don't care that they weren't married — these two were together for a long ass time. Not to mention the fact that they have two kids together. More and more, celebrities and normals alike are opting not to get married, but to live in a partnership that means the same thing without the paperwork. They're still committed to each other and love each other, and it's awesome that Johnny and Vanessa are splitting amicably, with the goal of remaining friends. However you look at it, fourteen years is a super long time, and good for them for making it work for this long.
