Jodie Foster apparently just married her girlfriend of about a year, and I’m gonna need everyone to hold on here for just a hot second! Does no one else remember Jodie’s speech at last year’s Golden Globes? BECAUSE I DO AND I’VE BEEN LIED TO.

As you may recall, Jodie was just supposed to accept the Cecil B. DeMille Lifetime Achievement Award, but instead she launched into a speech that teased us into thinking she was about to come out publicly as a lesbian, but then chided us for even caring. You know, just normal things for your mouth to say on a stage during an award ceremony that’s being nationally broadcast. I know a lot of people were really into the spirit behind her message or whatever, but I thought it was ridiculous.

But regardless, the bottom line of that speech was — I am single. I. Am. Single. I couldn’t understand much else from that nonsense monologue without subtitles, but that sentence shone brightly through.

I’m not saying that people don’t have the right to change their minds, because they totally do, but if you’re really dead set on getting married, you could at least do us the courtesy of coming out as someone in a relationship beforehand so it’s not so jarring, y’know? Otherwise we’re all like, “What? Jodie Foster? How? I thought she promised us she was single during that five minute long love song to Mel Gibson just last year! Well this is gonna take some time to wrap my head around!”

But anyway, the lucky lady is Alexandra Hedison, whom Jodie has apparently been dating for a little less than a year. She’s a photographer, director, and actress who had a bit role on The L Wordand who also happened to date Ellen DeGeneres for about three years, up until 2004.

Congratulations to the two of them, and many good wishes. (Chiefly that Jodie finds a better way to refer to her wife than ‘most beloved BFF’, which is what she called Cidney Bernard, her partner and co-parent of twenty years during that epic speech.)
