Jennifer Hudson Grammys "I Will Always Love You" Whitney Houston

You have to hand it to Jennifer Hudson—with maybe a day's notice, she got it together to sing a lovely rendition of Whitney Houston‘s iconic song “I Will Always Love You” in tribute to the late diva at tonight's Grammys. Despite reports that she was sobbing during rehearsals this morning, Jennifer got through the song with nary a wobble and truly did Whitney justice.

Grammy executive producer Ken Ehrlich already gave a statement about what was always going to be a small tribute:

It's too fresh in everyone's memory to do more at this time, but we would be remiss if we didn't recognize Whitney's remarkable contribution to music fans in general, and, in particular, her close ties with the Grammy telecast and her Grammy wins and nominations over the years.

Honestly, I'm not sure that a tribute from another performer was necessary tonight. At the beginning of the show, LL Cool J led the audience in a heartfelt prayer to Whitney, and they played a video of her performing the Bodyguard song at the 1994 Grammys. In my mind, that was tribute enough, to simply remember her presence and her beautiful voice. What I've embedded below is the original footage from 1994, if you'd like to relive it.

Rest in peace, Whitney.
