Countdown To The Mother: But Robin Isn’t The Mother!

How-I-Met-Your-Mother-Season-8-Episode-23-Robin

I don’t know what to say. I truly don’t know what to think anymore. How I Met Your Mother is killing me. The way they leave me constantly guessing about Robin and Ted’s relationship is confusing, frustrating and just downright annoying. Robin made her choice months ago when she said yes to Barney’s proposal. And even though I was never sure their wedding would actually happen, I never thought Ted might be the reason why.

Some of you may be asking yourselves, why not? Don’t worry I’ll tell you. Since the very first episode of this show, we have known that Robin is not the mother. After telling his kids the story of how he met Robin, Ted tells them that's how he met their Aunt Robin. Their Aunt. Not their mom. So why do they keep hinting at Ted and Robin being destined for one another? It’s not okay.

Robin spends the entirety of this episode searching for a locket she once buried in Central Park in hopes of one day having it at her wedding as her ‘something old.’ Her dad and Barney both ditch her to play laser tag. So of course, Ted comes to her rescue even though he has to skip an important interview to do so. This, of course, is supposed to show you what kind of guy Ted is in comparison to Barney. Plus, I don’t think it was just a coincidence the way the show portrays Barney’s relationship with Robin Scherbatsky Sr. Barney gets along fantastically with the man who made Robin feel inadequate her entire life.

It bothers me that the show is doing this when I’d finally begun to slightly enjoy Swarkles as a couple. I feel like Barney would have been there to help Robin if she’d actually told him how important it was to her. I suppose the point is that Ted knew how important it was even when Robin told him the opposite. I guess some people might call that significant, but I feel like that’s just Ted. Clearly, Robin is doubting her decision to marry Barney. But that doesn't mean jumping into Ted's arms is going to make it all better. I guess we’ll have to wait and see what happens.

Oh and also, did anyone else completely forget that Marshall and Lily are moving to Italy? Because I did. Whoops! Last week, they didn’t mention it once and I guess I don’t have a very good memory. Watching them pack for the trip was slightly funny and slightly disturbing (the gorilla suit/blonde wig memory…tmi). It has me wondering how the show is going to work logistically with the two of them gone. Is next season going to start one year after the finale? Because I think I would enjoy that. How about anyone else?

All in all, this was definitely not my favorite episode. There were a bunch of funny scenes. Ted with the fanny pack and Barney and Robin’s dad playing laser tag, but the end just ruined it all for me. Ted and Robin are not supposed to happen, and I’m going to be very unhappy next week if they get together.
