Let’s Not Act Surprised That Honey Boo Boo Acted Like A Brat On The Tonight Show

By  |

According to an eyewitness report on Salon today from Christy O'Shoney, Honey Boo Boo allegedly behaved like a total brat during her recent Tonight Show interview with Jimmy Fallon. While I'm sad to hear this, I'm not at all surprised. Because c'mon. It's not like she became famous for her church mouse impressions. The kid became famous for being loud and for being outspoken and for not taking shit from anybody. Wasn't that why we giffed her to death?

Because she said things like this:

honey boo boo don't make me go all ghetto on you

and this:

honey boo boo piss all over yourself quote

While I originally rejected her (and her family) for being a sign of the apocalypse, I eventually came around to embrace Honey Boo Boo. And then to defending her. Mostly because her fame and her weight quickly made her a go-to punchline for lazy comedians. (And worse, the aspiring comedians who lurk in the comment section.) But just because she won me over didn't me that I was delusional about her future.

No kid escapes fame unscathed. Sure, you can throw Dakota Fanning's name out there. But I think we all know she's an old soul parading around in a child's body, Skeleton Key style. There's just no way you can put a kid in front of a camera, make her a celebrity and expect it not to go to her head. Especially if she's being rewarded for being ridiculous. I mean, her nickname is Honey Boo Boo. How was this ever going to turn out any other way?

While there are lots of WTF moments mentioned in the Salon article (enough that you should check it out), this is definitely the most insane one. The one that most strongly suggests that she's officially out of control.

But the most notable moment to be left out of Honey Boo Boo’s appearance on “The Tonight Show” was when she became so fed up that she actually struck Mama June. Up until this point, Fallon had been doing a great job of navigating Alana’s weird behavior, but it was at this moment when he became positively awesome. “NEVER hit your mother!” he exclaimed, in a voice that was serious with just a hint of a joke, and the studio audience erupted in applause. Finally, we thought, someone is addressing this child’s attitude.

While this kind of behavior's obviously unacceptable, it also just feels inevitable at this point. Mama June made Honey Boo Boo famous. While the rest of the family's fun to watch, it's Honey Boo Boo who makes us actually tune in to Here Comes Honey Boo Boo. Her willingness to be a star is inextricably tied to the family's future success. Not only does this put a lot of pressure on Honey Boo Boo, but it also makes her far too powerful. Should a kid ever hit a parent? No. But should a kid ever be responsible for a family? Also, no.

I'm not suggesting that Honey Boo Boo hit her mother to get back at her, but I am suggesting that the family probably goes to great lengths to keep Alana happy. So when she's not happy and when she realizes things aren't going her way, she strikes out. Literally, in this case. In some ways, she's no worse than your typical spoiled and entitled child. In other ways, she's far worse because we've seen what happens to spoiled kids who grow up in the spotlight. They turn into Justin Biebers and Lindsay Lohans and the list goes on and on. Everyone tolerates their behavior when they're young and cute and coming around with cash. But we know what happens when they grow up…and it isn't pretty.

So I hope her parents — who I do believe are inherently good people — see this happening and realize that this whole TV show thing isn't worth it anymore. You can get an 8-year-old back under control. It isn't so easy when she's an adult with a trust fund and a complete lack of morals.
