Hocus Pocus, a fan-favorite classic Halloween flick is getting a reboot, and the announcement fittingly comes just in time for the spookiest month of the year. The cult film about witches, sacrificing virgins and true love, is getting remade.

According to Deadline, Disney is in the early stages of development on a reimagining of the 1993 film. The new version of the film, which fans have been quick to point out is not the sequel they asked for but a complete re-do, is being written by The Royals creator Scarlett Lacey. David Kirschner, a producer on the original movie, will be the executive producer but the original director, Kenny Ortega (also known for directing the High School Musical trilogy, BTW) is not on board at this point.

Also not on board: the original cast. Sarah Jessica Parker, Bette Midler and Kathy Najimy brought the three resurrected witches to life in the original film, but will not be returning for this iteration.

Fans took to social media after the news broke, mostly to express that they don’t want a remake of the perfectly fine original.

This news comes after years of circulating rumors that Disney would be creating a sequel, rumors that were consistently shut down and denied by those involved in the film. Speculative sequel titles included Hocus Pocus 2: Rise of the Elderwitch, or Hocus Pocus 2: The Witches Return.

The original film follows the story of two teenagers, a kid sister, and an immortal cat as they try to put an end to three immortal witches’ reign of terror. The witches were accidentally brought back to life, and they have one night to secure their futures, and the kids have one night to put an end to them.

The second movie would allegedly follow a new evil-doer who was unleashed on a suburban town, much like the original. However, those claims turned out to be false, and instead, we’re getting a remake.

While this is not the news we necessarily wanted to hear, all we can do is wait for the cast to be revealed and the trailer to premiere before we can really judge too harshly.
