Here Comes Honey Boo Boo Is Offering Watch & Sniff Cards, But Can We Not?

Here Comes Honey Boo Boo is already the ultimate guilty pleasure show, but this latest gimmick TLC has concocted to promote the new season involves very little pleasure at all. According to the New York Daily News, the network is starting a “Watch & Sniff” promotion featuring scratch-and-sniff cards that you can use while you watch the July 17 premiere. Apparently 10 million cards featuring six scents will be distributed in People and Us Weekly in July, as well as in select Time Warner retail stores. So if you're so inclined, that's where you can find them. Oh goodie. This is on par with finding out you can enter to win Farrah Abraham's used bikini in terms of my level of excitement. In other words, zero excitement. I would like to politely decline TLC's offer to let me smell what goes on in Honey Boo Boo's house.

I am neither a regular view of Here Comes Honey Boo Boo nor an aficionado of scents, unless you include rubbing magazine perfume samples on my wrists when I want to smell fancy, but I'm fairly confident that the smells we'll be smelling with these cards will not be pleasant smells. That's the whole point of offering this gimmick in the first place. You don't offer Smell-O-Vision for a show with nice smells. It's just one of those rules we have in place as a society. Because apparently we all hate ourselves and derive entertainment from smelling terrible things. Simply seeing sketti and neck crust is enough for me. I don't need the smell to go with it. I believe it's gross. No, really I do. No convincing needed over here. Just like I don't need to eat a jelly bean to know that earwax tastes disgusting, J.K. Rowling!

The network's explanation for the promotion is just the icing on this towering cake of ridiculousness.

“We couldn't think of a more fitting way to kick off the new season than with two Watch ‘n Sniff episodes,” TLC general manager, Amy Winter, said in a statement. “The family loves coming up with crazy games and hijinks, so now our audience gets to play along with one.”

Really? You couldn't think of anything more fitting than allowing viewers to smell what they're seeing on the screen? Actually, come to think of it, there probably isn't anything more fitting. Oh my goodness gracious this is really happening.
