‘Heathers’ TV pilot being developed

Just when you thought producers wouldn’t consider remaking another movie or TV show, think again.

FOX and Sony TV are developing a modern take on the 1989 Heathers movie that starred Winona Ryder and Christian Slater, according to Variety.

Need a refresher? Here’s a movie trailer from the original movie:

All of the characters from the movie are expected to be in the pilot – Veronica Sawyer (played by Ryder), J.D. (Slater) and the “Heathers.” Remember Shannon Doherty (90210) was one of the “Heathers”?

The movie focused on high school student Veronica and her dealing with a group of “mean girls” who were all named Heather. After meeting the new guy at school, J.D., the Heathers are killed one by one by Veronica and J.D., but they fake their deaths to make them look like suicides. Veronica used diary entries to chronicle her life and her struggle with the Heathers.

The dark comedy script will be written by Mark Rizzo with help from Jenny Bicks (Sex and the City). The show will be produced by Sony Pictures TV along with Lakeshore Entertainment, which owns the rights to the movie, according to Variety.

“We had the title, and talked about doing a film remake at times," Lakeshore’s Gary Luccesi told Variety. “But doing it for TV seemed like a fresh and original idea.”

What do you think? I think a film remake would have made more sense, because I’m not sure how they are going to do it as a TV show if it follows the movie’s plot. Bodies would be piling up and wouldn’t they eventually run out of “mean girls”? Plus, do we really need a to encourage this kind of violence – teens killing teens because they can’t get along in high school – in a weekly format?
