Gwen Stefani and Blake Shelton Cover ‘Hotline Bling,’ Sadly Without the Terrible Dancing
Last night Jimmy Fallon and his injured fingers joined the coaches of The Voice for a round of karaoke. That's really all it is, but of course The Tonight Show is all about the fun and games, so they had to call it “Spin the Microphone” and make up a few random rules that were inevitably ignored. All you need to know is that Adam Levine, Gwen Stefani, Pharrell and Blake Shelton all got up on stage to perform hits from yesterday and today, and it was a lot of fun.
Okay, so it wasn't all fun. Mostly because Adam Levine decided he was going to be his usual douchey self. He's tasked with singing Britney Spears' “Oops!…I Did It Again,” but instead of just having a good time with it, he acts like having to sing it is a threat to his artistry and just mumbles his way through it. Then as he descends the stage he declares it his “walk of shame.” Dude, get over yourself. Things get better when Blake sings “YMCA” and Pharrell does a duet of “It Takes Two” with Jimmy. (Side note: What the hell is on the back of Pharrell's jeans? Did he rip them?)
But the highlight of the game is Gwen and Blake's version of Drake's “Hotline Bling.” Gwen is very excited to get to do it, while Blake doesn't seem to know any of the words. That doesn't matter, though, because Gwen totally kills the song while Blake provides an occasional “bling” into the microphone. My only complaint is that they refrained from showing off their terrible Drake dance moves. Gwen sways a little, but nothing can compare to the Elaine dancing we saw in that video. I'm just waiting for Julia Louis-Dreyfus herself to recreate it.
