How To Dress Like A Golden Globes Starlet On A Non-Famous-Person Budget

By  |

The 2013 Golden Globes just laid a fashion egg on us, and it's time to crack the motha' open. And amongst the parade of aspirational evening wear porn that is the Golden Globes Red Carpet, we had our gushables, our hateables, and our grab-a-torch-and-burnables. But for the moment, we're going to keep things positive because there was a great deal we liked. Enough stuff to excite the middle schooler in us who wants to dress just like the popular girl in her expensive duds. But can I afford Stella McCartney? No. But I'm dealing with it. So we've assembled some downtown price renditions of our favorite red carpet looks, proving that you don't need a couture budget to pull off a red carpet look.

Nicole Kidman70th Annual Golden Globe Awards held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel

Although she took a hiatus from being nominated for anything this year, Nicole Kidman brought her sartorial a-game this year. She killed 'em DEAD in this McQueen gown, giving us a touch of S&M edge with a fishnet and boned' panel over the midriff. Just like donning a fake nose, this is a gesture that insists– “I have range, and I'm a badass underneath this porcelain skin and ski-slope nose!” And to take a page out of her book, we've paired a sheer-midriff black bralette with a slinky black maxi skirt, and topped it off with a chunky bib necklace.

Emily Blunt

70th Annual Golden Globe Awards held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel

Red and black seemed to be the mode this year with the starlet's gowns, but the women that did something different really stood out in my mind. That's why I love Emily Blunt's look. She's a statue in this Michael Kors gold lace bias cut dress, and the pink earrings are an unconventional yet chic touch. Our rendition is a bit more street-friendly, but still keeps the regal essence of the ensemble on a budget.

( Lucca Couture Liquid Gold Maxi Dress, $89 Urban Outfitters; Kenneth Jay Lane gold-plated Swarovski Crystal and Resin Clip Earrings $130 Net-a-Porter; Foldover Sequin Clutch Bag, $49.25 ASOS; Herbers Sandals, $49 Aldo) Total price of the look: $317.25

Lucy Liu70th Annual Golden Globe Awards held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel

Everyone, c'mon! Despite what every worst-dressed list for this event may say, Lucy Liu‘s dress was kind of awesome. Although it may be a WOAH kinda look, this Carolina Herrera was such brave divergence from what everyone else was doing. That said, I'm pretty into the updated Versailles thing, and she served up some 17th century France realness at a night where most looks can verge on beige.

(Aidan Mattox Floral Printed Dress, $184.14 Bloomingdales; Lulu Townsend Glitter Envelope Clutch, $26.95 DSW; Red Suede Strappy Heel, $20.99 White House Black Market) Total price of the look: $232.08

Tina Fey and Amy Poehler

70th Annual Golden Globe Awards held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel

And without kudos to the ladies of the evening, this list would be pointless. If these two hosted every American award show for the duration of their lives, I would be so  happy. Tina Fey and Amy Poehler owned everything last night, from playing fake nominees, to holding each other's faces amorously, to costume changes. Fey is old Hollywood ladylike in L'Wren Scott, and Poehler works this menswear-inspired Stella McCartney look like a pro. As with every other life venture, these looks inspire me to be more like either of these powerhouse chicks in the wardrobe department. That said, I'm working with limited funds.
